Over 3.5 million m³ of ice, rock, and snow collapsed from the Birch Glacier, putting 9 million tons of pressure on the glacier.

The entire village of Blatten (approx. 300 people) was evacuated in advance. A major collapse on May 28 caused a pressure wave felt kilometers away.

Debris breached protective dams; damage to buildings in the village is likely. The glacier is moving at 10 meters per day — further collapses expected. Authorities declared a state of emergency; return to the village remains uncertain.

Experts warn: Partial burial of Blatten is still a real possibility.
