Cov Spain enters six-month state of emergency to tackle pandemic
Posted by: Mr Big - Today 09:23 PM - Replies (1)

Spain is one of Europe’s worst COVID-19 hot spots, with over 3 million infections.

Its response to the pandemic has often been hampered by political wrangling, but the government this time managed to gather enough votes for parliament to back extending an initial two-week decree until May 9.

Some worried about the consequences, though, in a country that is already suffering through its worst recession since the late 1930s civil war.

Cov Researchers Discover a Second 'Key' That Makes The New Coronavirus So Infectious
Posted by: Mr Big - Today 09:06 PM - Replies (1)

This time we weren't so fortunate. Just what makes SARS-CoV-2 so much more infectious than its predecessor is a question we're now a little closer to solving, with researchers uncovering yet another way the virus gains entry into our cells.

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich in Germany and the University of Helsinki in Finland led a study that discovered a receptor called neuropilin-1 gives the novel coronavirus a leg-up in infecting our tissues.

This particular protein is relatively abundant on cells lining the nasal cavity, making it a piece of cake for the virus to establish a home inside our bodies, raise a virus family, and then spread to a new host.

hot Brain Scans Show a Whole Spectrum of COVID-19 Abnormalities We Can't Fully Explain
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - Today 07:25 PM - Replies (1)

Among the many serious symptoms of COVID-19, the strange neurological effects experienced by many patients count as perhaps the most mysterious.

A sudden loss of smell and taste was one of the first unusual symptoms reported by COVID-19 patients, but stroke, seizures, and swelling of the brain (called encephalitis) have all been described.

alert Earth-sized planet is discovered roaming the Milky Way without a parent star
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - Today 07:11 PM - Replies (2)

A roughly Earth-sized, 'free-floating' planet roaming across the Milky Way — while gravitationally unattached to any star — has been discovered, a study reported.

Astronomers from the US and Poland say that this so-called 'rogue planet' is the smallest ever identified to date.

While most known planets orbit a star, the team believe our galaxy may be teeming with rogue planets — possibly outnumbering the number of stars in the Milky Way.

In 2011, the team found 10 such objects — each about the size of Jupiter, far larger than the current find — that did not have a parent stars within 10 astronomical units.

shin Astronomers Discovered 39 New Gravitational Wave Events in Just Six Months
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - Today 07:05 PM - Replies (1)

A little over five years ago, humanity was yet to detect gravitational waves.

Now, observations are pouring in at an astonishing speed. In a six-month span last year, the LIGO-Virgo collaboration detected, on average, 1.5 gravitational wave events per week.

cib Lightning 'Sprites' Have Been Detected on Jupiter For The First Time, NASA Says
Posted by: G-Zero Guest - Today 07:02 PM - Replies (1)

NASA's Juno spacecraft just captured images of colourful bursts of lightning-like electricity high in Jupiter's atmosphere.

These phenomena, which include jellyfish-shaped 'sprites' and glowing disks called 'elves', also occur high up in Earth's atmosphere during thunderstorms.

shin France raises national terror alert system to MAXIMUM level after Nice church attack
Posted by: Mr Big - Today 06:45 PM - Replies (2)

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Thursday that the country’s Vigipirate national security alert system would be set at “attack emergency,” the highest level of the security protocol. The alert system was raised from “enhanced security – risk of attack,” French media reported.

Vigipirate is a French acronym for “vigilance and protection of installations against the risk of terrorist bombing attacks.”

Three people were killed hours earlier at a church in Nice. The suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he used a knife to attack the congregation. Later, French media reported that a knife-wielding man was shot and killed after attempting to attack police in the city of Avignon.
