Ukraine crisis: Russia begins new military exercises .. Russia has begun military exercises, involving more than 8,000 troops, close to the border with Ukraine.

The defence ministry in Moscow confirmed that artillery such as rocket launchers and anti-tank weapons would also be involved in the exercises.

They come at a time of high tension ahead of Crimea's referendum on Sunday on whether to join Russia.

Ukraine PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk has told the UN Security Council his country is a victim of Russian aggression.

He said it was "absolutely and entirely unacceptable, in the 21st Century, to resolve any kind of conflict with tanks artillery and boots on the ground", in reference to Russian troops at key sites in Crimea.

But he also said: "We still believe that we have a chance to resolve this conflict in a peaceful manner." .. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26564846

The tragic events that took place in eastern regional center ended up with spilled blood, with at least one man murdered and several dozen wounded.

“We have repeatedly stated that those who came to power in Kiev must disarm the militants, provide security to the population and ensure people’s legitimate right to rally.

“Unfortunately, as shown by the events in Ukraine, this is not happening, the Kiev authorities do not control the situation in the country,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry declared.

“Russia is aware of its responsibility for the life of compatriots and citizens in Ukraine and reserves the right to take these people under protection,” ended the statement.

The latest information arriving from Ukraine suggests that during the night clashes in Donetsk at least one man was killed while up to 29 people were injured. Four injured remain in hospitals, one of them in a critical condition.

Crimea referendum opponents manipulate detached norms of intl law – Churkin

wewait

Russia does not want war and neither do the Russians, and I'm convinced the Ukrainians don't want that either,” ambassador Vitaly Churkin told an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Thursday. “We don’t see any basis to consider the issue in such terms.”

It is unacceptable to reject Crimea’s right for self-determination using a smokescreen of protecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity, without even trying to balance these two principles, Churkin told the council.

“Some dispute the legality of such a referendum, but it is unacceptable to manipulate individual principles and norms of international law, randomly pulling them out of context not only of the international law, but the specific political circumstances and historical aspects,” Churkin said.

No common vision’: Talks between U.S. and Russia regarding Ukraine end in failure.. After six hours of talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, U.S. officials said they “did not find common ground” and everything now depended on Russian President Vladimir sunflower girl’s reaction to Sunday’s breakaway vote in Crimea.

Despite flying in early Friday from Washington for crisis talks only two days before Crimea is to decide whether to split away from Ukraine, Kerry acknowledged that his mad dash to London had been in vain. .. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/03/14/no...n-failure/

Ukraine youth mobilize against ‘Russian aggressors’ in Crimea

Young men and women in the nationalist heartland of western Ukraine are signing up to defend their country from what they call “Russian aggressors” who have taken over Crimea.

“I’m a high-ranking Judoka and can shoot well,” said Tetiana Turtshina as she waited outside her local police station in the pro-European city of Lviv.

Now this: Updated: Russia vetoes resolution on Crimea shithit

Russia has vetoed a UN resolution declaring tomorrow's referendum on the future of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula illegal, but its close ally China abstained in a show of Moscow's isolation.

Supporters of the US-sponsored resolution knew that Russia would use its veto. But they put the resolution to a vote this morning to show the strength of opposition to Moscow's takeover of Crimea. The 13 other council members voted yes.

The resolution would have reaffirmed the council's commitment to Ukraine's "sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity".
