One of Vladimir Putinโs nuclear submarines has been spotted off the coast of Scotland, it has been reported.
Prime minister Rishi Sunak and and defence secretary Grant Shapps were told at a โsecretโ briefing that a Russian Yasen-class submarine was detected earlier in June.
An RAF surveillance plane trailed its movements along the west coast of Ireland to Scotland.
It is understood that the 13,800-tonne submarine Kazan crossed near to Britainโs nuclear naval base in Faslane without actually crossing territorial waters.
Sweden has intercepted a Russian fighter plane that was in Swedish airspace.
This is reported by the Swedish Air Force. The incident happened yesterday afternoon east of the island of Gotland, but was only reported this morning. The Russian fighter was an SU-24, the Soviet Union’s most advanced attack aircraft in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Russian aircraft was initially warned with a verbal call from the Swedish Air Combat Command. When this was not responded to and the plane did not deviate from its route, a Swedish fighter plane JAS39 Gripen took off, which diverted the Russian aircraft from Swedish airspace.
Swedish military doctrine holds that whoever controls Gotland is able to broadly control air and naval movements in the Baltic Sea.
Sweden reopened its garrison on Gotland in 2018 after years of slashed military spending saw it close in 2004.
Russia’s unilateral annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 had prompted Sweden to start beefing up its military again.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Western powers, led by the United States, believed they had won the Cold War and could dictate the global order while dismissing Russia’s legitimate concerns with evasive answers.
“The Western powers, led by the US, considered that they had won the Cold War and had the right to unilaterally determine how to organize the world. The practical expression of this worldview became the project of unlimited expansion of the North Atlantic bloc, both spatially and temporally. To our legitimate questions, they responded with excuses, claiming that no one intended to attack Russia and that NATO’s expansion was not directed against Russia,” said the head of state during a meeting with the leadership of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

A fleet of Russian warships reached Cuban waters on Wednesday ahead of planned military exercises in the Caribbean in what some see as a projection of strength as tensions grow over Western support for Ukraine.
Three ships slowly crossed the mouth of the Havana Bay accompanied by small boats that guided them through the narrow channel. The flagship frigate, adorned with the Russian and Cuban flags, was greeted by 21 cannon salutes. Sailors in dress uniform stood in military formation as they approached the island.
A nuclear-powered submarine was expected to arrive behind them.
The U.S. military expects the exercises will involve a handful of Russian ships and support vessels, which may also stop in Venezuela.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has threatened to ban staff at his companies from using Apple devices if the iPhone maker integrates OpenAIโs artificial intelligence software into its operating systems.
His remarks came after Appleโs annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, at which it announced a partnership with OpenAI, through which ChatGPT will be paired with Appleโs digital assistant Siri.
