The projectile may be capable of flying more than 15,000km, a senior Japanese government official has warned

North Korea’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) could potentially reach US shores, according to Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Pyongyang test-launched the projectile earlier on Thursday, describing the move as a warning to its regional adversaries. While North Korean officials did not specify the type of ICBM or provide any technical details, officials in South Korea and Japan estimated its flight time at 87 minutes, with the missile reaching an altitude of up to 7,000km while traveling 1,000km horizontally. North Korea traditionally fires missiles on steep vertical paths, to test their capabilities while avoiding other countries.

At a press-briefing on Thursday afternoon, Hayashi noted that if launched horizontally, the projectile could have a much longer range.

On October 31, North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast, as reported by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The specifics of the missile remain unconfirmed, but Japan’s Coast Guard indicated it could also be a ballistic missile. This development comes amid ongoing tensions and military tests, including North Korea’s recent testing of its longest intercontinental ballistic missile, showcasing the regime’s continued focus on advancing its missile capabilities.

South Korea, US say 3,000 North Korean troops are entering combat imminently, but experts are unsure that will fundamentally change the course of the war.

Ukraine prepared to fight North Korean troops in the Russian region of Kursk on Wednesday, as the entry of a second nuclear power in Russia’s war against Ukraine threatened to escalate and broaden the conflict.

The United States Pentagon confirmed on Tuesday that North Korean troops were in Kursk, where Ukraine launched a counter-invasion almost three months ago.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed the deployment on Monday. β€œToday I can confirm that North Korean troops have been sent to Russia and that North Korean army units are deployed to the Kursk region,” he told reporters.

Ukrainian ground forces commander Oleksandr Pavlyuk said via Telegram on Sunday that an estimated 10,520 Russians were dead or wounded in the preceding week.

In Kursk alone, Russia had suffered 17,800 casualties over the past three months, Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskii said on Telegram, including 6,600 killed.

Households should also be prepared for cyberattacks and the use of chemical weapons, a report has warned

EU citizens should start stockpiling three days’ worth of goods in order to be ready for various potential disasters, including a nuclear conflict, a report has warned.

Published on Wednesday by former Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, the initiative is part of the EU’s push to make the bloc more resilient in the face of supposedly mounting threats, ranging from natural disasters to a major military conflict.

The report encourages EU households to stockpile β€œbasic self-sufficiency” goods that would last for at least 72 hours for fear of potential shortages in case of β€œarmed aggression through conventional means” or other hostile activities such as β€œcyberattacks or the use of chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons.”

β€œOne click can switch off power grids and plunge whole cities into the dark,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at the presentation of the report.

The document also calls on the EU to boost its defense and spend around 20% of its common budget, currently worth around €1 trillion ($1.08 trillion) over seven years, on security and crisis preparedness.

German government is advising citizens to stockpile food and water for use in a national emergency.

Citizens are advised to store enough food to last them 10 days, because initially a disaster might put national emergency services beyond reach.

Five days’ water – two litres (half a gallon) per person daily – is advised.
