Company targeted 12 to 18 year-olds through WhatsApp with payments of £1,500

Moderna has been rebuked by regulators after offering children cash to test the Covid vaccine.

The pharmaceutical company was ordered to pay £14,000 after it emerged that a representative had sent a WhatsApp message offering £1,500 to children to take part in Covid booster trials.

The UK Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA) ruled that the offer amounted to “inappropriate financial inducement” and found the company had brought “discredit upon the pharmaceutical industry”.

The offer was made by a paediatrician from an unnamed NHS trust, inviting those aged between 12 and 18 years old to enrol in the NextCove trial, which was examining the efficacy of Moderna’s booster jab.

The inducement was made even though a research ethics committee had warned about the “large amount of money” that Moderna was offering participants, and voiced concern it was “much higher than would be considered a reasonable reimbursement”.

It is time for real transparency in clinical research. 

The PMCPA ruling against Moderna is another reminder of an all-powerful pharmaceutical industry, able to breach the rules without fear of meaningful or timely repercussions.

A massive solar storm has knocked out radio communication that is expected to affect millions across the world. 

The major X9.05 solar flare was fired from the sun and is expected to impact regions in Africa, the Atlantic Ocean and eastern South America. According to spaceflight meteorologist Nick Stewart, the major X-class solar flare is “in progress.”

The massive solar flare, has the power to spark shortwave radio blackouts. It has already affected communication across Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean. 

The latest flare, that was fired from the sun earlier this week, is the second-strongest one to have hit Earth this solar cycle. The current solar cycle started in 2019 and these strong bursts could indicate that we have entered its peak.

Marburg hemorrhagic fever has killed 11 people in Rwanda, health authorities said, as the East African country continues to investigate the source of an outbreak first traced among patients in health facilities.

There are 36 confirmed cases of the disease that manifests like Ebola, with 25 of them in isolation, according to the Rwandan government’s latest update. Rwanda declared the outbreak on Sept. 27 and reported six deaths a day later. Authorities said at the time that the first cases had been found among patients in health facilities and that an investigation was underway to determine the source of the outbreak.

Netanyahu said that Iran’s attack was foiled due to its air defence systems and also thanked the U.S. for its support.

In a veiled warning to Khamenei, Netanyahu said that the regime in Tehran does not understand Israel’s determination to defend ourselves and to exact a price from our enemies. Netanyahu cited Sinwar, Deif and Nasrallah to claim that they underestimate Israel’s will to defend itself and now some in Tehran are doing the same.

Iran has launched a large-scale ballistic attack on Israel, with the elite Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) claiming it has fired “dozens” of missiles at military targets across the country.

The IRGC has said the attack comes in response to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian group Hamas, who was killed in Tehran back in July, as well as to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon last week. Iran warned Israel against retaliation, promising a “crushing response” should any action be taken.

Israel has launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah. Israeli officials described the offensive as “localized raids” that are “very limited in scope,” but said there would be “no long-term occupation” of Lebanon.

Hezbollah said it launched strikes at troops in northern Israel, later adding that no Israeli soldiers had entered Lebanon.

Moscow has warned that the Israeli ground operation in Lebanon “will lead to a further escalation of violence in the Middle East.”

“Russia strongly condemns the attack on Lebanon and calls on the Israeli authorities to immediately cease hostilities and withdraw troops from Lebanese territory,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It urged the Israeli leadership to look for diplomatic means of resolving the conflict.

Moscow expresses solidarity with the authorities and people of Lebanon, who “have been subjected to an armed aggression,” the ministry stated.

According to the White House, Iran is preparing a ballistic missile attack on Israel “The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel in the near future. We actively support defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack. A direct military attack by Iran on Israel will have serious consequences for Iran,” a senior White House official said, according to CNN.
