The attacks targeted energy infrastructures and facilities supporting Kiev’s military, the Defense Ministry has said

Moscow has confirmed that it conducted  large-scale strikes on Ukraine overnight, targeting critical energy and military-industrial infrastructure. The Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement on Sunday detailing the operation, which utilized long-range air- and sea-based weapons as well as drones.

“The strike targeted critical energy infrastructure supporting the work of Ukraine’s defense industrial complex as well as plants producing military equipment,” the ministry stated, adding, “All designated targets have been hit.”

Further specifics on the extent of the damage have not been provided.

It is one of the strangest shifts in the Earth’s magnetic field since Daleks plotted to extract the planet’s core in a 1964 Doctor Who adventure.

But this is not science fiction, it is science fact: Earth’s magnetic North Pole is drifting towards Russia, just as it has been since the early nineteenth century – but at a markedly slower rate.

Not to be confused with the geographic North Pole, which marks the world’s northernmost point, the magnetic North Pole is the direction towards which compass needles point.

‘The magnetic pole has been moving very slowly around Canada for many centuries since the 1500s,’ said Dr Ciarán Beggan of the British Geological Survey. 

‘In the past 20 years, it accelerated north towards Siberia, increasing speed every year until about five years ago, when it suddenly decelerated from 50 to 40km per year.

The last of four consecutive supermoons in 2024 rises this week.

November’s Full Beaver Moon will rise on Friday (Nov. 15), just in time for those willing to stay up late for some weekend skywatching. The moment of full moon occurs at 4:28 p.m. EST (2128 GMT) on Friday, but the moon will appear full for most observers for a day or two prior to the moment of exact fullness.

November’s full moon joins another celestrial treat: the lovely Pleiades star cluster, located just beside the moon in the Taurus constellation. This dense cluster of stars, also known as the “Seven Sisters,” is one of the most popular sights of the night sky. Just note that the brightness of the full moon will make viewing most of the stars of this cluster difficult.

This November’s full moon is a supermoon, meaning it’s closer to Earth in its orbit and appears larger and brighter than usual, according to NASA

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday picked Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-vaccine activist who dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Trump, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

Trump made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social. 

“I am thrilled to announce Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as The United States Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS),” he wrote. “For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation when it comes to Public Health.”

December futures spiked to levels last seen in December 2023 on concerns that Russia could halt supplies

Natural gas prices in Western Europe spiked on Thursday following warnings from Austrian state energy giant OMV that Russia could halt supplies.

The cost of gas futures for December delivery at the TTF hub in the Netherlands jumped by as much as 5% to roughly €475 ($502) per thousand cubic meters, or €46 per megawatt-hour, during morning trading, before retreating slightly later in the day. The last time gas futures were at this level was in December 2023.

Gas prices began to surge after OMV, one of the continent’s largest gas traders, warned late on Wednesday about a possible cessation of gas supplies from Russia due to its legal battle with Russian state energy major Gazprom. OMV had previously complained of “irregular” supplies from Gazprom to Germany, before deliveries ended completely in September 2022, and filed a lawsuit against the company’s subsidiary, Gazprom Export.

Masked men have disrupted talks on a severance plan for staff at an Audi factory that is being closed in Brussels

Police were forced to disperse protesters after riots erupted on Wednesday at a plant belonging to German carmaker Audi in the Belgian capital, Brussels, Reuters has reported.

Around 150 people, some of whom had masks on, breached the negotiating room during discussions on a severance plan between unions and the administration of the factory, which is being closed, an Audi spokeswoman told the agency.

They set off fireworks and prevented the participants of the talks from leaving the premises, she added.

Earlier this year, Audi, which is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, announced that it will stop vehicle production at the facility in Brussels in March 2025.

The plant is now facing closure after failing to find new investors and Volkswagen could not find an alternative use for the site.

Western nations “continue to play with fire,”Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a news briefing on Wednesday. She was commenting on reported attempts by London and Paris to convince Washington to allow Kiev to fire Western-supplied missiles deep into Russia.

Last week, The Telegraph reported that the UK and France were seeking US permission to greenlight strikes involving Storm Shadow/Scalp cruise missiles before President-elect Donald Trump’s January inauguration. 

“If the Kiev regime gets permission for the aforementioned strikes, we will treat it as NATO de-facto entering a direct conflict with Russia,” Zakharova said. “A response to the use of Western long-range weapons against the territory of our nation would be imminent and devastating.”

The Barcelona-based La Vanguardia says Elon Musk’s platform has become a “disinformation network”

Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia has announced that it will stop publishing on Elon Musk’s X and will suspend its accounts on the social media platform. In a statement on Thursday, the daily accused X of becoming a “network for conspiracy theories and disinformation” while completely abandoning “effective and reasonable moderation.”

Published since 1881, La Vanguardia is one of Spain’s oldest newspapers. While distributed mainly in Barcelona and Catalonia, it is one of Spain’s most widely read news outlets, and its main X account has a total of 1.3 million followers.

“Since Elon Musk’s arrival, X has been filled with toxic and disorienting content in an increasingly overwhelming way,” the news outlet said in a statement. It noted that under Musk’s management the platform has allowed “ideas that violate human rights, such as hatred of ethnic minorities, misogyny and racism” to run free, all with the sole purpose of making more money.
