U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will begin tomorrow.
The US has doubled recent tariffs imposed on all Chinese imports, effective from Tuesday. The levy, which has risen from 10% to 20%, comes in addition to other targeted duties Washington previously imposed on thousands of goods from the Asian powerhouse.
Last month US President Donald Trump ordered new tariffs on all goods from the countryβs three largest trading partners, Mexico, Canada and China, claiming the measures were necessary to protect American interests. He also cited concerns over an influx of lethal drugs from the countries, illegal immigration and trade imbalances.
Washington has accused China of supplying chemicals used in the illicit production of synthetic opioid fentanyl.
An executive order published on Monday claims that Beijing has failed to address the issue, and that 20% levies instead of 10% are being applied.
Beijing has slapped tariffs of up to 15% on various food commodities imported from the US and expanded controls on doing business with American firms. The move comes in response to Washingtonβs latest tariff hikes on Chinese goods.
On Tuesday, the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced 15% levies on imports of chicken, wheat, corn and cotton from the US, as well as 10% tariffs on American sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The measures come into effect on March 10, according to the ministryβs statement.
