North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the sea Monday, South Korea’s military said, hours after South Korean and U.S. troops kicked off their large annual combined drills, which the North views as an invasion rehearsal.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile firings, North Korea’s fifth missile launch event this year, were detected from the North’s southwestern Hwanghae province. It called the weapons close-range but didn’t say how far they flew. The military said South Korea bolstered its surveillance posture and is closely coordinating with the United States.

Earlier Monday, the South Korean and U.S. militaries began their annual Freedom Shield command post exercise, their first major combined training of President Donald Trump’s second term. The allies have already been engaging in diverse field training exercises in connection with the Freedom Shield training.

Coastguard statement in full published at 13:17

Here’s the full statement we’ve had from HM Coastguard:

“HM Coastguard is currently co-ordinating the emergency response to reports of a collision between a tanker and cargo vessel off the coast of East Yorkshire.

“The alarm was raised at 9:48am.

“A coastguard rescue helicopter from Humberside was called, alongside lifeboats from Skegness, Bridlington, Maplethorpe [sic] and Cleethorpes, an HM Coastguard fixed-wing aircraft, and nearby vessels with firefighting capability.

“The incident remains ongoing.”

A large rescue operation has been launched off the coast of East Yorkshire.

A number of people have reportedly abandoned the ships following the collision, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) says in its latest statement, adding that there are reports of fires on both vessels.

Two separate sources familiar with the situation earlier told the BBC that the oil tanker was on fire.

As we’ve been reporting, search and rescue teams from across the region have been deployed to respond to the incident.
