The former president has slammed conservatives while claiming that the US is more divided than ever

Former US President Joe Biden has accused Donald Trump’s supporters of having β€œno hearts,” while claiming that America has β€œnever been this divided.”Biden himself was frequently accused by conservatives of demonizing his political opponents and inciting divisions during his four years in office.

Biden hit out at his successor on Tuesday in his first public speech since leaving the White House, alleging that Trump has inflicted a β€œbreathtaking” amount of damage on federal programs through extensive cuts.

β€œThey’ve taken a hatchet in Social Security, pushing additional 7,000 employees, 7,000 out the door in that time, including the most seasoned career officials. Now they’re getting ready to push something more out the door,” Biden stated.

The former president, who served between 2020 and 2024, went on to demean Trump’s supporters, arguing that the US has β€œnever been this divided.”

β€œGranted, it’s just 30%, but it’s a 30% that has no heart,” Biden said, apparently referring to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll in which almost a third of respondents approved of Trump’s attempts to address the high cost of living.

Biden’s remarks have drawn criticism from conservatives, who alleged that the Democratic Party and the former president’s policies were one of the main contributing factors to divisions in American society.

The White House said China is now facing up to a 245 percent tariff on imports to the U.S. “as a result of its retaliatory actions,” another escalation in a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

The top potential tariff is higher than the previously stated 145 percent and was referenced in a fact sheet published by the White House late on Tuesday.

It accompanied an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that launched an investigation into the “national security risks posed by U.S. reliance on imported processed critical minerals and their derivative products.”

Newsweek has contacted the White House press office by email outside of normal business hours for comment.

The U.S.-China trade war is rattling global markets, which fear the economic fallout of the conflict and others that Trump has launched against America’s trading partners.

Cutting off Chinese imports complicates American supply chains, increasing costs and forcing businesses to source from elsewhere. Consumers also face higher prices. Trump’s strategy is to use tariffs to pull more manufacturing investment into the U.S.
