The Holy Father has bruised his arm but not fractured it. The Pope turned 88 last month. He suffered another fall some days before his December 17 birthday.

“This morning, following a fall at the residence of Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis suffered a contusion to his right forearm, without fracture. The arm was immobilized as a precautionary measure,” the Holy See Press Office reported on January 16, 2025.

The 88-year-old, who has been in increasingly fragile health in recent years, fell at the Santa Marta residence where he lives in the Vatican but did not break any bones, the press office said in a statement.

“This morning, due to a fall at the Santa Marta house, Pope Francis suffered a contusion on his right forearm, without fractures. The arm was immobilised as a precautionary measure,” it said.

In December, the Argentine sported a large bruise on his right jaw caused by a fall from his bed.

The Palestinian armed group is committed to the terms of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, a senior official has said

Palestinian armed group Hamas has rejected claims by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that it is creating a last-minute β€œcrisis” in finalizing the deal to release the hostages held in Gaza.

On Wednesday, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had struck an agreement securing the release of the remaining hostages. According to multiple media outlets, the agreement approved in Qatar involves a 42-day truce and an exchange of prisoners, including all Israelis taken captive in the October 7, 2023 Hamas incursion into the country.

β€œHamas is committed to the ceasefire agreement, which was announced by the mediators,” Izzat al-Risheq, a senior member of the group’s political bureau, said in a post on Telegram on Thursday.

The statement came shortly after Netanyahu’s office accused the Palestinian group of β€œreneging on the understandings” reached as part of the hostage deal and β€œcreating a last-minute crisis that is preventing an agreement.”

Los Angeles Wildfires: The weather agency said that winds, combined with severely dry conditions, have created a β€œ Particularly Dangerous Situation” which means that any new fire could explode in size.

Los Angeles Wildfires: Firefighters in Los Angeles are battling two massive blazes as the National Weather Service pushed back its dire warning of critical fire weather which came as a much-needed reprieve.

Although danger is not abated as forecasters said the winds were below danger levels but were expected to strengthen with potentially fire-fueling gusts.

Red flag warnings remained in effect from Central California to the Mexican border as officials said that danger was not over owing to an increase in winds.

Mark Rutte has urged bloc members to β€œprepare” for war and increase defense spending

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has called on members of the US-led military bloc to adopt a β€œwartime mindset” and significantly increase defense spending, citing supposed threats from Russia and other nations.

Rutte noted on Wednesday that NATO members have increased defense investments and conducted more frequent military exercises. However, he argued that these efforts are β€œnot sufficient to deal with the dangers coming our way in the next four to five years.”

The bloc’s β€œfuture security is at stake,”Rutte claimed in his opening remarks at a meeting of the Military Committee in Chiefs of Defense in Brussels. He accused Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran of attempting to β€œweaken our democracies and chip away at our freedom.”

Moscow has repeatedly denied assertions that it represents a threat to any NATO member states and has instead accused the US-led bloc of waging a proxy war against Russia and encroaching on its territory.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin said that practically all NATO states are currently at war with Russia. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also noted on Tuesday that history appears to be repeating itself, suggesting that there were β€œobvious parallels” between Moscow’s current confrontation with NATO and the attempts of Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler to take over Russia after subjugating dozens of European countries.

On Tuesday, Rutte announced that NATO would bolster its presence in the Baltic Sea – a strategic area for Russian naval operations and energy exports – by launching a new mission under the pretext of protecting undersea infrastructure.

The NATO chief revealed that this presence will involve frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and a β€œsmall fleet of naval drones” that are expected to provide β€œenhanced surveillance and deterrence.”

Raise military spending or start the language lessons, Mark Rutte has told the European Parliament

European members in NATO should either drastically increase their military spending or start studying Russian, the US-led bloc’s new secretary-general, Mark Rutte, has claimed, in a warning to EU lawmakers.

Rutte’s remarks came during a question and answer period at the end of the joint meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) on Monday.

While two thirds of NATO members are now meeting the bloc’s 2014 target of spending 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on the military, it is not enough to protect them from Moscow, Rutte alleged.

”We are safe now, but not in 4-5 years,” Rutte said. β€œSo, if you don’t do it, get out your Russian language courses or go to New Zealand. Or decide now to spend more.”

NASA reported that a massive coronal hole recently opened across the Sun’s circumference, further letting out an alarmingly fast stream of solar wind reaching speeds up to 800 km/s, towards the Earth causing concern and panic across social media.

The matter in question also sparked debate among scientists about its possible effect on Earth, since it can lead to geomagnetic storms causing disturbance for satellite operations and electrical systems. Moreover, these geometrical disturbances can also result in lower magnetic latitudes.

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has hit southwestern Japan, the country’s Meteorological Agency said Monday.

Tsunami advisories were issued for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the temblor was centered, in the southwestern island of Kyushu, as well as nearby Kochi Prefecture, shortly after the quake struck at 9:19 p.m. local time, according to the agency.

The U.S. Geological Survey revised its estimate down from 6.9, adding that “there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake” for the United States.
