The flight from Azerbaijan suffered an incident in Russian airspace during a Ukrainian drone raid, the Kremlin has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, to express condolences for a deadly plane crash this week, the Kremlin said on Saturday.

He offered an apology for the fact that such an incident “took place in Russian airspace,” adding that it occurred during a Ukrainian drone raid, which was being repelled by air defences.

“The Azerbaijani passenger plane, which arrived on schedule, made repeated attempts to land at the airport in Grozny,”the statement said. The capital of Russia’s Chechen Republic, as well as other cities in the region, “were being attacked by Ukrainian combat drones at the time, and Russian air defences were repelling those attacks.”

Nineteen residential care centers are currently under increased supervision by the Care Department of the Flemish government.

This was evident from the overview on the department’s website on Friday. The Care Inspectorate identified deficiencies at residential care centers that are under increased supervision.

They received a reminder and must then draw up a step-by-step plan to comply. In the meantime, they receive extra checks, at least twice a year. Of the nineteen residential care centers currently on the list, ten will be added in 2024.

since March 2023, mainly due to staff shortages, deficiencies regarding medication safety, incomplete care records and insufficient help with daily care.

If residential care centers improve their operations, the Department of Care will lift increased supervision.

If not, they risk a suspension (where they are no longer allowed to accept new residents), a fine of up to 25,000 euros, the appointment of a provisional administrator or even a permanent closure.

Two caretakers at a retirement home in Pecq in the province of Henegouwen have shared humiliating photos of some of the residents in a Facebook group.

The images show, among other things, a man who has fallen out of his wheelchair and someone lying on a bed in a strange position. The two employees were initially suspended, but are now allowed to return to work.

Finland has shared a brutal response with Russia, after its special forces seized a Russian shadow fleet tanker believed to have carried out a destructive attack on a set of power and internet cables in the Baltic Sea. 

The Eagle S’s anchor is suspected of causing damage to the Estlink-2 power cable, which takes electricity from Finland to Estonia across the Baltic Sea, after it went down just after noon on Christmas Day.

In the latest incident involving disruption of key infrastructure, Finnish police and border guards boarded the Eagle S at just past midnight on Thursday and took over the command bridge, Helsinki Police Chief Jari Liukku said at a news conference.

EU, Nato respond to “dark” ship detained in Finnish waters.

A Kremlin spokesperson said following the excoriating comment that it had nothing to add on the issue.  

Just In: Finnish authorities detained a Russian oil tanker, the Eagle S, as part of an investigation into damage caused to the EstLink 2 power cable on Thursday. The EstLink 2, which delivers electricity to Estonia via the Baltic Sea, was cut in the Gulf of Finland on Wednesday.

In a joint statement by the EU Commission on Thursday, Kallas described the severance of the cable as the “deliberate destruction of Europe’s critical infrastructure,” blaming Russia for the incident.

An Azerbaijan Airlines flight that crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday killing 38 people was downed by a Russian air defence system, four sources in Azerbaijan with knowledge of the investigation told Reuters.

Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 came down near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan after diverting from an area of Russia in which Moscow has used air defence systems against Ukrainian drone strikes in recent months.

At least one person was reportedly killed in the incident in the city of Vladikavkaz

A major fire occurred at a shopping mall in the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz on Wednesday morning, after a powerful explosion went off inside, according to officials and media reports.

The incident took place at the Alania Mall, a major shopping and entertainment center in the capital of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania in the North Caucasus. The emergency services said one person was killed and two others were injured, citing preliminary reports from the scene. The fire affected around 800 square meters and was put out in about an hour, according to official updates.

The U.S. government has warned American citizens against traveling to Belarus.

Those who are already in the country have been advised to leave as soon as possible. According to the U.S. State Department, there is a high risk of potential protests in Belarus.

Do not travel to Belarus due to the Belarusian authorities’ arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the risk of detention, the continued facilitation of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the potential for civil unrest, and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus. U.S. citizens in Belarus should depart immediately,» the State Department said in a statement.

U.S. citizens should regularly reevaluate possible departure plans in the event of an emergency. Border crossings with neighboring states are sometimes closed with little notice. Additional closures of crossing points along Belarus’ borders with Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, and Ukraine are possible,» the statement reads.

The Philippines is sounding the alarm of a population crisis as excess deaths continue to surge while birth rates also fall.

The alarming situation was revealed in data from the Philippines Civil Registration System.

The government agency is responsible for collecting and maintaining vital statistics, including births, marriages, and deaths.

The data is obtained from vital events registered at the appropriate Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrar throughout the country.

The figures are then subsequently submitted for encoding to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Provincial Statistical Offices of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

On a yearly basis, the PSA publishes a report on these vital statistics called the Vital Statistics Report (VSR).

The VSR relating to the year 2023 was only recently published.

If 2019 is taken as the last normal and reference year, there have been 908,566 fewer births from 2020 through 2023.

In addition, there have been 386,939 more than expected deaths.

The committee heard that not only have there been hundreds of thousands of excess deaths since the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, but there has also been a decline of nearly one million births in the country.
