Kiev has targeted a military airfield near the city of Taganrog, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said

Ukrainian forces fired a barrage of six US-made ATACMS missiles at a military airfield near the southern Russian city of Taganrog, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said, vowing retaliation for the attack.

ATACMS is a long-range, guided missile that gives commanders the immediate firepower to shape the battlespace. Each ATACMS missile is packaged in a look-alike MLRS launch pod and fired from the MLRS family of launchers.

Samples of three deadly viruses vanished from a secure facility and no one noticed for years

Over 300 vials containing live samples of three viruses with high mortality rates went missing from a Queensland laboratory in 2021, but the Australian authorities only confirmed the breech on Monday.

The vials became unaccounted for after a freezer at Queensland’s Public Health Virology Laboratory broke down sometime in 2021. The discrepancy was discovered in August 2023, but it took until Monday for official confirmation of the incident to emerge.

The missing samples were identified as Hantavirus, Hendra virus and Lyssavirus.

Queensland Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said it was “difficult to conceive of a scenario” in which the public could be at risk, pointing to the lack of reports about infections over the past five years.

An evacuation order is in place near the city of Malibu in the US state of California after a wildfire broke out with a “rapid rate of spread”.

The blaze has been dubbed the Franklin Fire by authorities, who say it has burned more than 300 acres in Malibu Canyon after starting at about 22:50 local time on Monday (06:50 GMT).

Firefighters are on the scene and a mandatory evacuation order is in place in the surrounding area. 

It is not yet clear what caused the blaze, which has been labelled a brush fire – meaning a type of blaze that affects lower-lying vegetation such as grasses.

Just In: The Franklin fire started Monday night and had burned more than 1,800 acres by the early morning, as large parts of Southern California braced for dangerous wildfire conditions.

Just In: The fire’s footprint grew from 100 acres at 11:54 p.m. Monday to more than 1,800 acres about four hours later, according to the Los Angeles County Fire and CalFire officials – at one point nearly tripling in size in just one hour.

The president made the statement in response to questions regarding the deployment of Russia’s new hypersonic missile system

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has confirmed that nuclear weapons are present in Belarus. His comments came on Tuesday during a question-and-answer session with factory workers, BelTA news agency has reported. 

“I have brought in nuclear warheads – more than just a few,” Lukashenko stated. He dismissed any skepticism, suggesting that those who doubt the presence of the weapons in the country “didn’t even notice when we brought them in.” 

Lukashenko’s remarks were prompted by inquiries about the planned deployment of the Russian Oreshnik missile complex in Belarus. While the Oreshnik system itself is not classified as nuclear, it possesses significant firepower.

On November 21, Russian Prssident Vladimir Putin confirmed the successful test of the Oreshnik missile, which hit a Ukrainian defense facility in Dnepropetrovsk in retaliation for the Kiev regime’s strikes deep into Russia using Western weapons.

Tested in combat, the missile showed its power in a nuclear-free configuration, with Putin calling it unmatched in the West – equally destructive as nuclear weapons but without radiation.

In a move driven by rising NATO threats and the deployment of US long-range missiles in Germany, Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko agreed to position the Oreshnik system in Belarus by the end of 2025.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country over a failed attempt at imposing martial law, a justice ministry official said on Monday, amid growing calls for him to step down and a deepening leadership crisis.

Yoon has apologised for the botched attempt and said he was leaving his political and legal fate to his ruling People Power Party (PPP) but has not resigned. He has become a subject of criminal investigation, according to local media reports.
