Raise military spending or start the language lessons, Mark Rutte has told the European Parliament

European members in NATO should either drastically increase their military spending or start studying Russian, the US-led bloc’s new secretary-general, Mark Rutte, has claimed, in a warning to EU lawmakers.

Rutte’s remarks came during a question and answer period at the end of the joint meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) on Monday.

While two thirds of NATO members are now meeting the bloc’s 2014 target of spending 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on the military, it is not enough to protect them from Moscow, Rutte alleged.

”We are safe now, but not in 4-5 years,” Rutte said. “So, if you don’t do it, get out your Russian language courses or go to New Zealand. Or decide now to spend more.”

NASA reported that a massive coronal hole recently opened across the Sun’s circumference, further letting out an alarmingly fast stream of solar wind reaching speeds up to 800 km/s, towards the Earth causing concern and panic across social media.

The matter in question also sparked debate among scientists about its possible effect on Earth, since it can lead to geomagnetic storms causing disturbance for satellite operations and electrical systems. Moreover, these geometrical disturbances can also result in lower magnetic latitudes.

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has hit southwestern Japan, the country’s Meteorological Agency said Monday.

Tsunami advisories were issued for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the temblor was centered, in the southwestern island of Kyushu, as well as nearby Kochi Prefecture, shortly after the quake struck at 9:19 p.m. local time, according to the agency.

The U.S. Geological Survey revised its estimate down from 6.9, adding that “there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake” for the United States.

Facebook initially balked at censoring satirical memes about Covid-19 vaccines until US government officials screamed, cursed, and threatened them into doing so, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the platform’s parent company Meta, has said.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Friday, Zuckerberg addressed his company’s censorship both during the 2020 election and afterward, seemingly blaming it on government pressure.

“I don’t think that the pushing for social media companies to censor stuff was legal,” Zuckerberg told Rogan. “At some level, I do think that having people in the administration calling up the guys on our team and yelling at them and cursing and threatening repercussions if we don’t take down things that are true… it’s pretty bad.”

According to Zuckerberg, the ban on censorship in the US Constitution does not apply to “content moderation” by private companies, “but the First Amendment does apply to government, that’s like the whole point.”

Zuckerberg: “They pushed us super hard to take down things that were true… Anything that says vaccines might have side effects you basically need to take down.”

Four major wildfires are raging across Los Angeles County. At least 10 people have died, with officials warning the true toll won’t be clear until it’s safe for investigators to go into neighborhoods.

Tens of thousands have been urged to flee since the blazes began this week, while a countywide evacuation warning accidentally sent to millions of residents has compounded already sky-high stress.

Whole neighborhoods have been devastated, with as many as 10,000 structures destroyed by the coastal Palisades Fire, expected to be the costliest in US history, and the Eaton Fire. Curfews are in place as police patrol for and arrest looters.

A wind-whipped wildfire tore across the celebrity area of Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles on Tuesday, triggering the evacuation of more than 30,000 residents and putting 13,000 buildings under threat, Reuters has reported.

According to officials cited by the news agency, the fire in the affluent neighborhood, between the coastal towns of Santa Monica and Malibu, has consumed nearly 12 square kilometers, sending up a plume of smoke, visible across LA.

The fire was first reported at 10:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, prompting thousands of evacuations across the district and into neighboring Malibu. A second blaze dubbed the Eaton Fire started several hours later near Pasadena, and a third named the Hurst Fire swept through Sylmar, in the San Fernando Valley to the northwest of Los Angeles, prompting more evacuations.
