A state of emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Santorini after days of consecutive earthquakes.

It comes after a magnitude 5.2 tremor was recorded at 21:09 local time (19:09 GMT) on Wednesday between the Greek islands of Amorgos and Santorini, making it the strongest in recent days. It is estimated to have occurred at a depth of 5km (3.1 miles).

The decree will be in effect until 3 March to “address the emergency needs and manage the consequences”, officials said.

More than 11,000 people have already left Santorini, with around 7,000 departing by ferry and 4,000 by air.

A 4.7 magnitude quake was also recorded south-west of Amorgos at 07:50 local time on Thursday, following 57 tremors between midnight and 06:30.

Magnitude refers to the size of an earthquake, with increases marked as decimal points. A magnitude 6.0 and above is considered severe, where as a magnitude 5.2, the strongest experienced so far in the region, is considered moderate.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has revealed it is closely monitoring an asteroid the size of a football pitch that could hit the Earth in a little over seven years.

The asteroid, called 2024 YR4, is estimated to have a one in 83 chance of a direct hit, causing “severe damage to a local region”, according to ESA.

The space rock, which measures 100m by 40m, is currently at a distance of around 27 million miles and moving away from the planet. But its path will cross the Earth’s orbit on 22 December 2032.

Most likely there would be a near miss, with the asteroid passing within a few thousand miles.

The Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, which is chaired by ESA, will discuss the latest observations of the asteroid at a meeting in Vienna next week.

President Javier Milei has accused the global health agency of mismanaging the Covid-19 pandemic

Argentina has announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing fundamental policy disagreements, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. The move mirrors a decision made last month by US President Donald Trump.

In a statement on X on Wednesday, President Javier Milei’s office declared that the WHO, which was created to coordinate responses to global health emergencies, had β€œfailed its biggest test” during the coronavirus outbreak.

It further claimed that the prolonged quarantines led to β€œone of the greatest economic catastrophes in world history.” In Argentina, the months-long lockdowns under the previous government – endorsed by the WHO – crippled the economy and resulted in 130,000 deaths, the presidential office argued.

UV-treated mealworm powder can be added to bread, cheese, pasta, and other food products under new regulation

The European Commission has approved a new food ingredient made from dried and ground mealworm larvae, the young form of beetles. The larvae will be treated with ultraviolet (UV) light, a process similar to how sunlight helps human skin produce vitamin D.

The approval is part of the EU’s plan to introduce more sustainable protein sources and allows up to 4% of the insect-based powder in products such as bread, cheese, pasta, and jams. The regulation takes effect on February 10.

The decision follows a scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which found that UV-treated mealworm powder is safe at approved levels. EFSA noted that while UV treatment enhances vitamin D3 content, it does not significantly contribute to dietary intake.

However, the agency warned that some people, including those with allergies to shellfish or dust mites, could experience reactions to mealworm proteins and suggested more research in this area.

Trump says US will β€œtake over” Gaza: President Donald Trump said that the US β€œwill take over” Gaza and that he won’t rule out sending US troops to secure American ownership.

Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich commended a plan presented by United States President Donald Trump to remove Palestinians from Gaza and take ownership of the strip.

β€œWe will work to permanently bury the dangerous idea of a Palestinian state,” Smotrich said in a video statement.

Smotrich had threatened to leave Israeli Prime Minister’s Benjamin Netanyahu’s government after a ceasefire deal was agreed with Hamas last month. Instead, he remained in government after receiving what he said were assurances that Israel will return to war in Gaza.

β€œI made this decision based on intimate knowledge of the behind-the-scenes actions in recent months and on my partnership in shaping our plans for continuing the campaign on all fronts. And believe meβ€”this is just the beginning,” he said.

The minister, a settler himself, leads Religious Zionism, a far-right party pushing for Jewish settlement in Gaza.

β€œThe plan presented yesterday by President Trump is the true response to October 7. Those who carried out the most horrific massacre on our land will find themselves losing their land forever,” he said.

Update:

Russia has rejected US President Donald Trump’s plan toΒ β€œtake over Gaza.” A two-state solution is the only way to settle the Middle East conflict, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has reiterated.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the nation’s top health official, moved closer toward confirmation Tuesday, with the Senate Finance Committee voting along party lines to send his controversial nomination to the full Senate.

By a 14-13 vote, the committee voted to approve the confirmation of Kennedy, who has faced intense scrutiny over his past anti-vaccine statements. The key swing vote putting Kennedy over the edge was Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., a physician who voted for Kennedy despite raising reservations about the selection.

“I’ve had very intense conversations with Bobby and the White House over the weekend and even this morning,” Cassidy said in a statement posted on X before the vote. “I want to thank VP JD specifically for his honest counsel. With the serious commitments I’ve received from the administration and the opportunity to make progress on the issues we agree on like healthy foods and a pro-American agenda, I will vote yes.”

An infestation will reportedly hit over 20 regions due to this year’s unusually warm winter

A locust invasion spurred by an unusually warm winter is expected to hit 21 regions of Russia, Izvestia reported on Monday, citing an internal report commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture. The ministry will reportedly form special teams to combat the insects and protect harvests.

The report stated that the number of regions exposed to the locust infestation during this agricultural season have increased by more than 30%, with the total area to be treated increased by 100,000 hectares (1,000 square kilometers).

The unusually warm winter season in Russia will result in a 30-50% increase in agricultural pests, plant diseases, and weeds, the report projected, adding that the ministry has allocated nearly 86 million rubles ($860,000) for treating the affected areas and organizing special teams for fighting the insects.

Schools were closed and emergency crews deployed on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini on Monday after a spike in seismic activity raised concerns about a potentially powerful earthquake.

Precautions were also ordered on several nearby Aegean Sea islands β€” all popular summer vacation destinations β€” after more than 200 undersea earthquakes were recorded in the area over the past three days.

β€œWe have a very intense geological phenomenon to handle,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said from Brussels, where he was attending a European meeting. β€œI want to ask our islanders first and foremost to remain calm, to listen to the instructions of the Civil Protection (authority).”

Mobile phones on the island blared with alert warnings about the potential for rockslides, while several earthquakes caused loud rumbles. Authorities banned access to some seaside areas, including the island’s old port, that are in close proximity to cliffs.
