American service personnel have been told that relying on the Chinese-developed AI model raises security and ethical concerns

The US Navy has barred its sailors from using the artificial intelligence model from the Chinese company DeepSeek, CNBC reported on Tuesday.

In an email sent to service personnel on Friday, the Navy warned that DeepSeek’s R1 model had been forbidden β€œfor any work-related tasks or personal use.”

The Chinese AI should be avoided because of the β€œpotential security and ethical concerns associated with the model’s origin and usage,” the message explained.

The Hangzhou-based start-up DeepSeek released its AI Assistant app earlier this month, and by this week it had become the most downloaded free app on the US Apple App Store, surpassing its American rival, OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Later in the day, a US Navy spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the email to CNBC.

The Smolensk Region has come under a mass drone attack, according to the regional leader

Multiple Ukrainian drones have targeted civilian infrastructure in Russia’s Smolensk Region, and at least one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was reportedly intercepted near a nuclear power facility, regional Governor Vasily Anokhin said on Wednesday morning.

Russian air defense and electronic warfare systems engaged several hostile targets during a β€œmass drone attack” on civilian facilities across different districts of the Smolensk Region, Anokhin wrote on Telegram.

β€œAccording to preliminary information, one of the drones was shot down during an attempted attack on a nuclear power facility,” Anokhin stated, without naming the facility. Some reports indicate that debris fell near the Smolenskaya Nuclear Power Plant.

Atomic scientists on Tuesday moved their “Doomsday Clock” closer to midnight than ever before, citing Russian nuclear threats amid itsΒ invasion of Ukraine, tensions in other world hot spots, military applications ofΒ artificial intelligenceΒ andΒ climate changeΒ as factors underlying the risks of global catastrophe.

It is set at the closest it’s ever been to apocalypse.Β

The terrifying news was revealed Tuesday morning in Washington, DC after deliberation by the organization’s Security Board and Board of Sponsors, which includes nine Nobel Laureates.

β€œEvery second of delay increases the probability of global disaster,” chair Daniel Holz declared. Last year, the clock was set at 90 seconds to midnight.

For 2025, multiple global threats were considered when deciding the clock’s time, including the proliferation of nuclear weapons, disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Russia-Ukraine warthe Israel-Hamas warthe Israel-Hezbollah conflict, bio-threats, and the continued climate crisis.

The UK reported a rise in cases of HMPV, the once ‘mystery’ virus that recently affected China

Health officials in the Republic are on high alert after the UK reported a spike in cases of the former ‘mystery’ virus that recently affected China. Earlier this month, China had to implement emergency measures after the virus, later identified as HMPV, rapidly spread across its northern provinces.

Concerns were raised after images shared online appeared to show overcrowded hospital waiting rooms and wards, with many patients wearing masks. However Beijing downplayed the severity of the situation, claiming that respiratory infections were “less severe” and “smaller in scale” compared to the previous year.

HMPV is not a new virus to humans, with the first case of a human infection reported in 2001 in the Netherlands. It tends to circulate during the winter in many countries, including Ireland.

Meanwhile, confirmed cases of the flu, which has similar symptoms to HMPV, are currently at “high levels” in Ireland, with the virus expected to continue circulating in the coming weeks.

U.S. public health officials have been told to stop working with the World Health Organization, effective immediately.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official, John Nkengasong, sent a memo to senior leaders at the agency on Sunday night telling them that all staff who work with the WHO must immediately stop their collaborations and β€œawait further guidance.”

Experts said the sudden stoppage was a surprise and would set back work on investigating and trying to stop outbreaks of Marburg virus and mpox in Africa, as well as brewing global threats. It also comes as health authorities around the world are monitoring bird flu outbreaks among U.S. livestock.

The Associated Press viewed a copy of Nkengasong’s memo, which said the stop-work policy applied to β€œall CDC staff engaging with WHO through technical working groups, coordinating centers, advisory boards, cooperative agreements or other means β€” in person or virtual.” It also says CDC staff are not allowed to visit WHO offices.

President Trump was misled and deceived by Anthony Fauci, Deborah Birx, the CDC, FDA and Alex Azar the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services who was under criminal investigation at the time Operation Warp Speed was signed. This deception led to deaths.

Rwandan-backed rebels marched into eastern Congo’s largest city Goma on Monday, and the U.N. said they were supported by at least some regular Rwandan troops, in the worst escalation of aΒ long-running conflictΒ for more than a decade.

A rebel alliance spearheaded by the ethnic Tutsi-led M23 militia said it had seized the lakeside city of more than 2 million people, a hub for displaced people and aid groups lying on the border with Rwanda and last occupied by M23 in 2012.

Service members will receive back pay.

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order to reinstate service members booted from the military for declining to get COVID-19 vaccine jabs, according to the White House.

“The Executive Order directs the Secretary of Defense to reinstate all members of the military (active and reserve) who were discharged for refusing the COVID vaccine and who request to be reinstated,” according to the White House fact sheet.

The service members who are reinstated will be restored to their prior rank, and will be provided back pay and benefits, according to the fact sheet.

“After the vaccine mandate was repealed in 2023, only 43 of the more than the 8,000 troops dismissed elected to return to service under the Biden Administration and Secretary Austin.”
