An infestation will reportedly hit over 20 regions due to this year’s unusually warm winter

A locust invasion spurred by an unusually warm winter is expected to hit 21 regions of Russia, Izvestia reported on Monday, citing an internal report commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture. The ministry will reportedly form special teams to combat the insects and protect harvests.

The report stated that the number of regions exposed to the locust infestation during this agricultural season have increased by more than 30%, with the total area to be treated increased by 100,000 hectares (1,000 square kilometers).

The unusually warm winter season in Russia will result in a 30-50% increase in agricultural pests, plant diseases, and weeds, the report projected, adding that the ministry has allocated nearly 86 million rubles ($860,000) for treating the affected areas and organizing special teams for fighting the insects.

The intermediate-range ballistic missile system will be deployed in the country within days, the president has said

Belarus expects the arrival of the Russian advanced intermediate-range ballistic missile system Oreshnik shortly, President Alexander Lukashenko has said, adding that it will be stationed not far from the two countries’ border.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, when Belarus is holding its presidential election, Lukashenko said that the weapon would be deployed β€œcloser to Smolensk,” the Russian city located some 60km east from the Belarusian border. He didn’t rule out, however, that it could be placed somewhere else later.

β€œWe will have the Oreshnik literally any day now. We have agreed with President Vladimir Putin that the next system will be delivered to Belarus even earlier than to Russia,” he said.

The Pikne exercises will last two weeks and involve servicemen from the US, Estonia, Latvia, France and the UK

NATO countries are set to kick off major war games in northeast Estonia near the border with Russia on Monday, focusing on the rapid deployment of the bloc’s forces and increasing their interoperability.

Some 2,000 troops from Estonia, Latvia, the US, France, and the UK are set to take part in the two-week Pikne (β€˜Lightning’) exercise, which is part of NATO’s broader Brilliant Eagle program dedicated to increasing the bloc’s deployment and cooperation capabilities in the Baltic Sea region.

According to the commander of the Estonian Division, Major General Indrek Sirel, who is leading the exercises, the war games will focus on β€œrapid deployment of reinforcements and cooperation between French, British and Estonian forces.” Units of the French Armed Forces will carry out a rapid deployment operation to Estonia by air, followed by joint multinational maneuvers on land, air and sea, Sirel said in a press release.
