The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday evening has risen to at least 632 people, with 329 others being wounded, state TV reported on Saturday night.

The initial figures provided by the Moroccan Interior Ministry shortly after the tremors, were 296 fatalities and 153 people injured.

Most of the damage occurred in the countryside, with remote areas south of Marrakech reportedly being hit the hardest.

Tremors were felt in the capital Rabat, as well as other cities, including Marrakesh, Casablanca, Agadir, and Kenitra. Many residents fled their homes and stayed on the streets overnight, helping to clear the rubble.

Videos shared on social media show that multiple buildings were damaged, with some destroyed entirely.

Lee, which was a Category 1 storm earlier Thursday, has been intensifying with exceptional speed in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, doubling its wind speeds in the last 24 hours.

The hurricane was located about 700 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, the hurricane center said in the 11 p.m. advisory.

The Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) first became operational in the early 1970s.

It is a strategic weapon system using a ballistic missile of intercontinental range. Missiles are dispersed in hardened silos to protect against attack and connected to an underground launch control center through a system of hardened cables. Launch crews, consisting of two officers, perform around-the-clock alert in the launch center.

The head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council has claimed a third world war is already underway, with the Moscow-Kiev conflict pulling in countries far beyond the region.

Speaking at the Kiev Security Forum on Tuesday, Aleksey Danilov argued that NATO needs Ukraine as a member, as global turbulence is set to continue. β€œWe’re going to strengthen the alliance,” he insisted.

β€œIf somebody thinks that World War III hasn’t started then it’s a huge mistake. It has already begun. It had been underway in a hybrid period for some time and has now entered an active phase,” he said.

Sitting on stage beside former CIA Director General David Petraeus, Danilov said that β€œif somebody thinks that it [the conflict in Ukraine] is about settling the scores between Kiev and Moscow then it’s a mistake. Things are much more complicated.”

Russia’s Sarmat strategic missile system has been put on combat duty, Yuri Borisov, the head of Russian state space corporation Roscosmos, said on Friday.

β€œThe Sarmat strategic complex has been put on combat duty,” Borisov said during an educational event.

Russia tested the nuclear-capable Sarmat missile throughout 2022. Last December, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia will maintain combat readiness and improve the country’s nuclear triad, which he called the main guarantor of its sovereignty.

Minsk has accused Warsaw of a border violation after a Polish military helicopter allegedly flew hundreds of kilometers into Belarusian territory. The incident took place on Thursday, the Belarusian border guard said in a statement.

A Soviet-made Mi-24 helicopter of the Polish Air Force flew some 1,200km into Belarus before changing course and returning to Polish airspace, the border guard said, adding that β€œthe Polish side was informed about the incident.” The aircraft was moving at β€œan extremely low altitude,” the statement added.

The Belarusian military did not reveal if it sought to contact the Polish pilots or scrambled any aircraft of its own to intercept the helicopter. It did publish a short clip supposedly showing the moment the chopper crossed the border between Belarus and Poland as it was returning to Polish airspace.

North Korea launched several cruise missiles into the Yellow Sea in the early morning hours of Saturday, South Korea’s military said. This comes shortly after Pyongyang conducted a nuclear strike drill and major US-South Korean military exercises.

In a statement quoted by Yonhap news agency, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the rockets were fired at around 4am local time, but did not provide further details on the type of missiles, their number, or their exact trajectory, citing ongoing analysis.

South Korea’s military added that they areβ€œstrengthening its monitoring and vigilance”and maintaining a β€œfull readiness posture in close cooperation with the United States.”
