According to reports from the US press, both Kiev and Washington are currently reassessing their battlefield strategy in light of the failed counteroffensive. These revisions are expected to be implemented in the early months of next year.

With Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s arrival in Washington to plead for more aid, the US media is seemingly trying to assure their readers that not all is lost for the Kiev regime on the battlefield. The New York Times has hinted that American and Ukrainian military officials are devising a new strategy to “create enough of a credible threat” forcing Moscow into “meaningful negotiations” at the end of 2024 or in 2025.

Stargazers have a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ to see a rare astronomical event tonight.

But you’ll have to be up during the small hours to witness it – and if you blink, you really could miss it.

An asteroid known as 319 Leona is set to pass in front of a faraway star called Betelgeuse, famous for its bright red tint and unpredictable behaviour.

There is apprehension about whether an asteroid will fully eclipse a giant star, leading to a unique blackout, or create a ‘ring of fire’ effect, where a thin, bright ring of the star would remain visible to many observers in some parts of the world.

The late hours of next Monday will mark the beginning of a striking astronomical event, extending into the early hours of Tuesday and captivating skywatchers and astronomers alike.

This event features the passage of Leona, an asteroid, across the luminous star Betelgeuse, creating a temporary eclipse and presenting a rare opportunity for astronomical observation.

Betelgeuse, a red supergiant, is the uppermost star in the constellation of Orion.

Earlier, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida touted Japan’s biggest defense build-up since the Second World War as a “turning point in history.” Japanese militarization envisaging doubling the nation’s defense spending within the next five years has sparked concerns among many countries of the Asia-Pacific region, considering the nation’s past.

Japan, which has embarked on an unprecedented military build-up of late, is at “a historic crossroads,” and must develop nuclear weapons, former editor for The New York Times Barry Gewen has argued.

Citing the “current geopolitical situation in Asia,” and the “present disarray in Washington,” Japan really does not have any other choice, he wrote in The National Interest.

If Russia prevails in the Ukraine conflict, it may find itself in a position to launch an attack on NATO that could trigger a global conflict involving American troops, US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday, when he urged Congress to pass a $111 billion national security package.

The bill, which was backed by Democrats, included aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. He also lashed out at Republicans – who have been reluctant to support the measure due to disputes over security at the southern US border, saying that by doing so, they “are willing to give [Russian President Vladimir] Putin the greatest gift he could hope for.”

“If Putin takes Ukraine, he won’t stop there,” Biden argued. “If Putin attacks a NATO ally…, well, we’ve committed as a NATO member that we’d defend every inch of NATO territory,” he stated, adding that Washington would like to avert this kind of a stand-off because it could result in “American troops fighting Russian troops.”
