The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Saturday launched military drills on the Chinese side of the China-Myanmar border, Tian Junli, the spokesperson for the Southern Theater Command of the PLA, has said. 

“Under the annual exercise plan, the PLA Southern Theater Command has organized army units to conduct military exercises on the Chinese side of the China-Myanmar border starting from November 25,” Tian said in a statement. 

The purpose of the drills is to test the army’s mobility, border control and firepower, the statement read. 

The troops of the Southern Theater Command are always ready to defend state sovereignty, border stability and people’s security, Tian said. No information is provided on the duration and extent of the drills.

The US drugmaker has escalated a dispute with Warsaw over unwanted doses

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has escalated its feud with Poland over excess Covid-19 vaccine doses that were ordered under a massive contract with the European Union. The company is suing the country over what it claims is an unfulfilled contract for Covid-19 vaccines.

Warsaw was locked into buying tens of millions of doses under a controversial contract the European Commission had signed with Pfizer in 2021 on behalf of EU nations. Pfizer is demanding 6 billion zloty ($1.5 billion) in compensation for 60 million doses that Poland’s government declined, after it stopped taking delivery of the jabs in April 2022. 

The entire bloc wound up ordering 1.1 billion doses under the contract, saddling EU states with a vaccine glut as the Covid-19 pandemic waned. The EU prosecutor’s office has already announced an investigation into the procurement process amid allegations of corruption and secret backroom deals while Polish Health Minister Katarzyna Sojka has warned other EU states could be next to face prosecution.

Warsaw has questioned the controversial role of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the Pfizer deal after it emerged she had for weeks privately communicated with the company’s CEO Albert Bourla during the contract negotiations. However, the European Commission claimed last year that her text messages with the big pharma boss on deals worth multiple billions of dollars executive could not be found.

Israeli forces and Hamas militants have agreed to temporarily cease hostilities in Gaza, starting at 7am local time on Friday morning. Hundreds of aid trucks are ready to pour into the war-torn Palestinian enclave, while Hamas is expected to release the first group of hostages later in the day.

There has been no official confirmation from either the IDF or Hamas that the fighting has come to a halt. However, an Al Jazeera correspondent in southern Gaza claimed that the truce has already started and that attacks have ceased. “We are witnessing a relative calm, that is gradually becoming more and more visible as there is a complete stop of fighter jets flying over the Gaza Strip,” he said.

According to Israeli media reports, rocket alarms were activated in the Israeli communities of Kissufim and Ein Hashlosha near the border with Gaza 15 minutes after the ceasefire was supposed to kick in.

From New Hampshire to Oregon, researchers are trying to figure out what’s causing an infectious respiratory disease among dogs that has turned deadly in rare cases.

The mysterious illness is described as an “atypical canine infectious respiratory disease,” the Oregon Department of Agriculture said in a November 9 news release. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, eye or nose discharge and lethargy.

Veterinarians in Oregon have reported more than 200 cases of the disease since mid-August. Other cases have been reported in Colorado, Illinois and New Hampshire.

“Based on the epidemiology of the cases reported at this point, the cases appear to share a viral etiology, but common respiratory diagnostic testing has been largely negative,” Oregon State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz told the American Veterinary Medical Association.

On Tuesday, Pyongyang announced that it had successfully launched a military reconnaissance satellite on a new rocket.

According to North Korea’s state news agency, the rocket was launched Tuesday from the Sohae Cosmodrome. The flight lasted 705 seconds, with the Chollima-1 carrier rocket following its set course, which “accurately put the reconnaissance satellite ‘Malligyong-1’” into orbit. 

Notably, the launch was attended by DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, who later congratulated all the specialists involved in the meticulous preparation and the blastoff.

A day prior to the event, Japan’s Coast Guard reported that Pyongyang had informed Tokyo of plans to conduct a satellite launch in the coming days.

The Israeli cabinet has accepted a deal with Palestinian movement Hamas for a temporary ceasefire and the release of hostages in a vote on Wednesday, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

The newspaper cited a senior Israeli official as saying that the deal would see Hamas release 30 children and eight mothers, as well as 12 more women, during a four-day ceasefire.

The official also said that all the branches of the Israeli security services supported the deal, the newspaper reported. The deal includes only Israelis, but Hamas may release foreign nationals under deals with other countries, the report said.

As confirmed by multiple media sources, the ship seized by the Houthis in the Red Sea is the Bahamian flagged Galaxy Leader. According to marinetaffic.com, this ship is designed to carry vehicles, and has a capacity of 1500 passenger cars.

The ship was en route from the Turkish port of Korfez to the Indian port of Pipavav with 25 crew members, including Bulgarians, Filipinos, Mexicans and Ukrainians, but no Israelis on board.
