Dozens injured during flight.

The news conference in Bangkok airport has finished, so let’s bring you some updated figures on the number of people injured on the Singapore Airlines flight.

One man, a 73-year-old British national, has died, and likely suffered a heart attack, authorities say.

Seven people are in a critical condition following the severe turbulence. 

In a previous post, we told you 23 passengers and nine crew members have been injured. The number of passengers injured is in fact much more, with 53 passengers and one crew member hurt.

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam issued a statement on his social media accounts, expressing “condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

“We do not have the details of those affected, but know that the government ministries and agencies, as well as SIA, are doing their utmost to support all those affected and working with the authorities in Bangkok, where the plane had been diverted to,” Shanmugaratnam said.

Ebrahim Raisi’s aircraft hit the ground in a mountainous area during bad weather

The Iranian government has confirmed that President Ebrahim Raisi and several other high-ranking officials were killed when their helicopter crashed in the northwest of the country on Sunday.

What happened

Reports began circulating on Sunday afternoon that Raisi’s US-made Bell 212 helicopter had made a “crash landing” in dense fog in a mountainous area near the city of Jolfa in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan. The president was returning to Tehran from the border region after inaugurating a dam on the Aras River with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Two other helicopters in Raisi’s convoy successfully made it to their destination.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova will make a statement at 02:45 pm GMT on Wednesday after an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico, Slovakia’s Dennik N news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Fico’s political party Smer, that previously assessed his condition as “life-threatening,” said that next several hours will be “crucial” for the prime minister.

Fico’s Attacker Used Legally Registered Short-Barreled Weapon – Reports

The attacker who attempted to assassinate Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico used a legally registered short-barreled weapon to shoot, the Dennik N news agency reported on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, media reported that Fico was taken to an ICU unit in a hospital after an assassination attempt that took place at a venue of the government’s field meeting.

The shooter is a man born in 1953, the newspaper added.

The suspect was restrained by police and arrested, Slovak newspaper Dennik N reported.

President Zuzana Caputova condemned the “brutal and reckless” attack on Fico, and wished him “a lot of strength at this critical moment.”

Fico took office in October 2023, after serving two stints as prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018. He immediately halted the previous government’s policy of military aid to Ukraine and called for a negotiated settlement between Moscow and Kiev. His neutral stance on the conflict has led to clashes with Brussels and pro-Western figures within Slovakia like Caputova.

Volodymyr Zelensky has canceled his visit to Spain on May 17 due to the difficult situation in Ukraine, Spanish news agency EFE reported on Wednesday, citing diplomatic sources. 

On Tuesday, Spanish broadcaster TVE, citing sources in the royal family, reported that Zelensky would visit Spain this Friday to sign a security agreement between Kiev and Madrid with the country’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. 

Apart from his visit to Spain, the Ukrainian president also canceled his official trip to Portugal which was scheduled for the end of the week, Portuguese media reported on Wednesday, adding that Zelensky had already canceled the visit twice.

Zelensky was expected to sign a security agreement with Portugal, the SIC Noticias broadcaster reported.

Sweden does not exclude a possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on its territory during wartime, while there is no such necessity in times of peace, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Monday. 

“We have two draft legislation prepared. According to them, Sweden says that we will not have permanent [NATO] troops or nuclear weapons deployed on Swedish territory in the time of peace … It is another thing during wartime. In this case, all NATO members will benefit from the ‘nuclear umbrella,’ which should exist as long as Russia possesses nuclear weapons,” the prime minister told Sveriges Radio.
