The UK reported a rise in cases of HMPV, the once ‘mystery’ virus that recently affected China

Health officials in the Republic are on high alert after the UK reported a spike in cases of the former ‘mystery’ virus that recently affected China. Earlier this month, China had to implement emergency measures after the virus, later identified as HMPV, rapidly spread across its northern provinces.

Concerns were raised after images shared online appeared to show overcrowded hospital waiting rooms and wards, with many patients wearing masks. However Beijing downplayed the severity of the situation, claiming that respiratory infections were “less severe” and “smaller in scale” compared to the previous year.

HMPV is not a new virus to humans, with the first case of a human infection reported in 2001 in the Netherlands. It tends to circulate during the winter in many countries, including Ireland.

Meanwhile, confirmed cases of the flu, which has similar symptoms to HMPV, are currently at “high levels” in Ireland, with the virus expected to continue circulating in the coming weeks.

U.S. public health officials have been told to stop working with the World Health Organization, effective immediately.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official, John Nkengasong, sent a memo to senior leaders at the agency on Sunday night telling them that all staff who work with the WHO must immediately stop their collaborations and β€œawait further guidance.”

Experts said the sudden stoppage was a surprise and would set back work on investigating and trying to stop outbreaks of Marburg virus and mpox in Africa, as well as brewing global threats. It also comes as health authorities around the world are monitoring bird flu outbreaks among U.S. livestock.

The Associated Press viewed a copy of Nkengasong’s memo, which said the stop-work policy applied to β€œall CDC staff engaging with WHO through technical working groups, coordinating centers, advisory boards, cooperative agreements or other means β€” in person or virtual.” It also says CDC staff are not allowed to visit WHO offices.

President Trump was misled and deceived by Anthony Fauci, Deborah Birx, the CDC, FDA and Alex Azar the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services who was under criminal investigation at the time Operation Warp Speed was signed. This deception led to deaths.

Rwandan-backed rebels marched into eastern Congo’s largest city Goma on Monday, and the U.N. said they were supported by at least some regular Rwandan troops, in the worst escalation of aΒ long-running conflictΒ for more than a decade.

A rebel alliance spearheaded by the ethnic Tutsi-led M23 militia said it had seized the lakeside city of more than 2 million people, a hub for displaced people and aid groups lying on the border with Rwanda and last occupied by M23 in 2012.

Service members will receive back pay.

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order to reinstate service members booted from the military for declining to get COVID-19 vaccine jabs, according to the White House.

“The Executive Order directs the Secretary of Defense to reinstate all members of the military (active and reserve) who were discharged for refusing the COVID vaccine and who request to be reinstated,” according to the White House fact sheet.

The service members who are reinstated will be restored to their prior rank, and will be provided back pay and benefits, according to the fact sheet.

“After the vaccine mandate was repealed in 2023, only 43 of the more than the 8,000 troops dismissed elected to return to service under the Biden Administration and Secretary Austin.”

The world’s largest iceberg is on a collision course with a remote British island, potentially putting penguins and seals in danger. The iceberg is spinning northwards from Antarctica towards South Georgia, a rugged British territory and wildlife haven, where it could ground and smash into pieces.

The “megaberg” – which is twice the size of Greater London and 130 feet tall – is expected to approach the remote island off Antarctica in the next two to four weeks.

Experts fear for the island’s rich wildlife. If the iceberg gets wedged in the shallow waters close to the island, it could block vital pathways for penguins to get food for themselves and their chicks.

This would mean parent penguins would have to swim further, burning more energy and bringing back less to feed their offspring.

Over 33 times the size of Paris — is drifting toward a remote British island where scientists say it could run aground and threaten penguins and seals

The Central Intelligence Agency has assessed that the COVID-19 pandemic is “more likely” to have emerged from a lab rather than from nature, an agency spokesperson said on Saturday.

The agency had for years said it could not conclude whether COVID-19 was the result of a lab incident or it originated in nature.

But in the final weeks of the Biden administration, former CIA Director William Burns asked CIA analysts and scientists to make a clear determination, stressing the pandemic’s historical significance, according to a senior U.S. official.

The intermediate-range ballistic missile system will be deployed in the country within days, the president has said

Belarus expects the arrival of the Russian advanced intermediate-range ballistic missile system Oreshnik shortly, President Alexander Lukashenko has said, adding that it will be stationed not far from the two countries’ border.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, when Belarus is holding its presidential election, Lukashenko said that the weapon would be deployed β€œcloser to Smolensk,” the Russian city located some 60km east from the Belarusian border. He didn’t rule out, however, that it could be placed somewhere else later.

β€œWe will have the Oreshnik literally any day now. We have agreed with President Vladimir Putin that the next system will be delivered to Belarus even earlier than to Russia,” he said.
