A wind-whipped wildfire tore across the celebrity area of Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles on Tuesday, triggering the evacuation of more than 30,000 residents and putting 13,000 buildings under threat, Reuters has reported.

According to officials cited by the news agency, the fire in the affluent neighborhood, between the coastal towns of Santa Monica and Malibu, has consumed nearly 12 square kilometers, sending up a plume of smoke, visible across LA.

The fire was first reported at 10:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, prompting thousands of evacuations across the district and into neighboring Malibu. A second blaze dubbed the Eaton Fire started several hours later near Pasadena, and a third named the Hurst Fire swept through Sylmar, in the San Fernando Valley to the northwest of Los Angeles, prompting more evacuations.

The veteran politician led the National Front Party from 1972 to 2011

The founder of the French National Front party (now named National Rally), Jean-Marie Le Pen, has died at the age of 96 at a care facility “surrounded by his loved ones,” his family said in a statement cited by national media.

Born in 1928 to a fisherman and a seamstress, Le Pen worked in numerous occupations throughout his life, including fisherman, deep-sea miner, and apartment surveyor. He also volunteered for the French Foreign Legion’s parachute regiment twice, and was involved in the Suez conflict in 1956 and the Algerian War of 1957.

He started his political career in the 1950s and was elected to the French National Assembly twice between 1956 and 1962 before founding his own party, the National Front, in 1972.

Le Pen also ran for president in France in 1974, 1988, 1995, 2002 and 2007, and came second in 2002 with almost 18% of the vote.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake, opens new tab struck the foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet’s holiest cities on Tuesday, killing at least 95 people and collapsing hundreds of houses, Chinese authorities said.

The earthquake’s epicentre was about 80 km (50 miles) north of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. Tremors also shook buildings in neighbouring Nepal, Bhutan and India.

The China Earthquake Networks Centre located the epicentre at Tingri county, known as the northern gateway to the Everest region, at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

A severe winter storm swept across the central United States on Sunday, unleashing brutal snow, hazardous ice, strong winds, and plunging temperatures, making it extremely difficult for people to travel. Forecasters warned of the potential for the “heaviest snowfall in a decade” in some areas.

Winter Storm and Blizzard warnings are issued for Kansas City, with four to eight inches of snow expected, limited visibility and winds reaching up to 40mph (65kph).

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that the allegations made by a lawmaker from the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Roderich Kiesewetter, about his supposedly upcoming trip to Moscow are false, calling such rumors “deeply indecent.” 

On Saturday, Kiesewetter said on X that Scholz might travel to Moscow and meet Russian President Vladimir Putin before February 23, while US President-elect Donald Trump’s meeting with Putin had been scheduled for March. He did not provide any sources of information.

“This is a false statement,” Scholz was quoted as saying at his party’s meeting by the RND media group.

Experts warn that genetic fragments in inoculations might overstimulate the immune system, potentially leading to cancer

Pfizer’s mRNA Covid-19 vaccines contain residual DNA levels exceeding regulatory safety limits, according to a peer-reviewed study published this week in the Journal of High School Science.

The research was conducted by student scientists at the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) White Oak Campus lab in Maryland.

Residual DNA refers to small pieces of genetic material that may remain in vaccines or medicines after manufacturing. These fragments come from the cells or processes used to make the products.

World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines state that a single vaccine dose should not contain more than 10 nanograms of residual DNA. The study, however, found levels in Pfizer’s vaccines exceeding this limit by six to 470 times.

Researchers analyzed vaccines obtained from BEI Resources, a supplier linked to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. They used NanoDrop and Qubit methods to measure DNA levels. Both methods showed contamination above acceptable thresholds. Residual DNA was found in six vials from two different vaccine lots.

Pfizer has been under investigation several times. One notable case occurred in 2009 when Pfizer paid $2.3 billion to settle a Department of Justice investigation into illegal marketing practices for several of its drugs.

This marked the biggest healthcare fraud settlement in history at the time.

More than 2,600 UK troops and 730 vehicles will take part in exercises on NATO’s eastern flank, the country’s Defense Ministry said in a statement. 

“Leading from the front, the UK is providing the largest contribution of forces with over 2600 personnel, and 730 vehicles deploying to NATO’s eastern flank,” the ministry said. 

According to the statement, the UK’s 1st Division will command all of NATO’s land forces during Exercise Steadfast Dart 25 in Bulgaria and Romania to practice the deployment of the new Allied Reaction Force, which can “rapidly reinforce” NATO’s eastern flank.
