The number of young adults diagnosed with cancer has increased significantly in recent decades.

According to the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the Netherlands, the disease was diagnosed in almost 4,200 Dutch people between the ages of 18 and 39 last year, compared to 3,100 diagnoses in 1990.

Breast cancer is the most common variant in young women, and testicular cancer in young men. Melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is the number two in both women and men. Cancer is one and a half times more common in young women than in young men.

In the population as a whole, the disease actually affects men more often. It is unknown why the number of diagnoses has increased.

The researchers have no concrete cause for the increase.

The number of young adults in the Netherlands decreased slightly during that period, from over 3.8 million in 1990 to over 3.6 million in 2024.

Experimental mRNA-LNP vaccine elicits robust immune response in calves, offering new hope for containing the U.S. HPAI outbreak.

The recent spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b into U.S. dairy cattle herds has raised alarms among public health experts, veterinarians, and global health authorities. In a new preprint study, researchers from institutions funded by the National Institutes of Health, USDA, and U.S. Department of Energy have demonstrated that an experimental mRNA-lipid nanoparticle (mRNA-LNP) vaccine targeting the H5 HA protein induces strong immune responses in Holstein calves.

This study provides timely and potentially transformative insights into a potential intervention strategy. The vaccine, adapted from the same platform used in human COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, may help reduce viral spread among cattle and limit the risk of zoonotic transmission.

The Ukrainian leader has said he would be β€œwaiting” for the Russian president on Thursday but only if Moscow agrees to a truce first

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has stated he is ready to β€œpersonally” meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in TΓΌrkiye on Thursday but only if Moscow first agrees to a truce. His statement came in response to Russia’s proposal to begin peace talks without pre-conditions.

β€œI will be waiting for Putin in TΓΌrkiye on Thursday. Personally,” Zelensky wrote in a post on X on Sunday. He still maintained that Kiev awaits β€œa full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy.”The Ukrainian leader also stated that he expected Moscow not to look for β€œexcuses”this time.

On Saturday, the Russian president offered Kiev the opportunity to restart direct negotiations in Istanbul, which it unilaterally walked away from in 2022. Moscow was ready to return to the negotiating table without any preconditions, the Russian leader said at the time.

Both nuclear-armed states confirmed their willing to stop hostilities after days of escalation

India and Pakistan have agreed to cease hostilities, officials from both sides have confirmed. US President Donald Trump earlier said that a deal between the two countries had been reached following a β€œlong night of talks” mediated by Washington.

India’s Foreign Ministry has announced that the ceasefire started at 5 p.m. local time.

On Friday, Pakistan launched a large-scale military operation against India called Bunyan Al Marsoos (Unbreakable Wall), in what it said was retaliation for Indian strikes on its territory and the Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir.

Islamabad described the campaign as a β€œbefitting” response to Indian β€œaggression.” Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan had no choice but to retaliate after India launched Operation Sindoor earlier this week, targeting what it called β€œterrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan.

Update:

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated further as both nuclear-armed neighbors accused each other of violating a newly agreed ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border in the disputed Kashmir region.

Moscow earlier accused Kiev of continuing attacks despite Russia’s proposal for a 72-hour truce

Ukraine is ready to declare a 30-day β€œfull unconditional ceasefire” in the conflict with Russia beginning Monday, Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga has said, adding that US President Donald Trump is being kept in the loop regarding ongoing peace efforts.

Moscow has said it is open to discussing a truce, but insists that it should also include a halt in Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine.

Sibiga made the proposal in a post on X on Saturday after a meeting in Kiev with leaders from France, Germany, Poland, and the UK, and a subsequent call with Trump.

β€œUkraine and all allies are ready for a full unconditional ceasefire on land, air, and at sea for at least 30 days starting already on Monday. If Russia agrees and effective monitoring is ensured, a durable ceasefire and confidence-building measures can pave the way to peace negotiations,” the minister stated.

The US president has urged a longer truce amid Kiev’s reported refusal to even observe a 72-hour pause unilaterally declared by Moscow

US President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Moscow and Kiev will soon agree to a month-long truce following his call on Thursday with Vladimir Zelensky, amid a 72-hour Victory Day ceasefire that was unilaterally declared by Russia.

Starting at midnight on Thursday, Russian forces ceased hostilities and remained at previously occupied positions, only providing a β€œtit-for-tat reaction” to violations by Ukraine, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow. Ukrainian troops reportedly carried out at least 488 attacks and attempted two incursions into Russia’s Kursk Region, according to the ministry.

Zelensky, who had previously dismissed the Russian peace initiative as β€œmanipulation” while Kiev intensified drone strikes on Russian territory, held a phone call with Trump later in the day. After the call, he claimed that β€œUkraine is ready for a complete ceasefire today, right from this moment,” but insisted that the truce should last for at least 30 days.

Update:

The support of at least 89 of the 133 cardinal electors participating in the conclave was needed to elect a new bishop of Rome. In accordance with tradition, a senior cardinal first addressed the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica with the words: β€œHabemus papam!” β€“ Latin for β€œWe have a pope!”

The new Pope himself then appeared on the balcony to deliver his first words as the pontiff. β€œPeace be with you all,” Leo XIV said, adding that it was β€œthe first greetings of the resurrected Christ.” He then explained that he would β€œalso like this greeting of peace to enter our hearts and our families.”

Though most projections estimate that the object will reenter the atmosphere around May 10, unknowns about its exact shape and size β€” as well as the unpredictability of space weather β€” make some degree of uncertainty inevitable.

It’s also unclear which portion of the vehicle is set to reenter, though researchers believe it to be the probe, or β€œentry capsule,” which was designed to survive the extreme temperature and pressure of landing on Venus β€” which has an atmosphere 90 times more dense than Earth’s.

That means it could survive its unexpected trip back home, posing a small but non-zero risk to people on the ground.

The chances of Cosmos 482 causing deadly damage are roughly 1 in 25,000, according to The Aerospace Corporation’s calculations, Sorge said.

That’s a much lower risk than some other pieces of space debris. At least a few defunct rocket parts reenter Earth’s atmosphere each year, Sorge noted, and many have carried higher odds of catastrophe.

Update:

After looping through space for 53 years, a wayward Soviet spacecraft called Kosmos-482 returned to Earth, entering the planet’s atmosphere at 9:24 a.m. Moscow time on Saturday, according to Roscosmos, the state corporation that runs the Russian space program.
