South African actor gained international recognition for his role in the drama which won best foreign language film

Presley Chweneyagae, the South African actor who gained international recognition for his leading role in the 2005 film Tsotsi, which won South Africa’s first ever Oscar for best foreign language film, has died. He was 40 years old.

His talent agency MLA on Tuesday confirmed Chweneyagae’s death and said South Africa had lost one of its “most gifted and beloved actors”.

“His passion for empowering the next generation of artists will remain integral to his legacy,” MLA’s CEO, Nina Morris Lee, said in a statement. She gave no details about the cause of death.

Chweneyagae’s three-decade-long career spanned theatre, television and film.

The Australian comedian announced she is battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma – a rare and fast-moving blood cancer – in a video on Thursday.

She appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease.

‘Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,’ she began.

‘It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. But the good thing is I’m surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team.

Strokes are on the rise among younger people, with a recent CDC report revealing a 14.6% increase among people aged 18–44 from 2020 to 2022.

While the alarming trend has been stumping medical professionals, one expert has shared some intriguing theories with The Post.

“We’ve never had patients so young,” said Dr. Mohammad Anadani, Chief of Neuroendovascular Services for the Endeavor Health Neurosciences Institute. 

Anadani believes both of their strokes were embolic — which means they originated elsewhere in the body and traveled to the brain instead of forming directly in the brain’s blood vessels.

“Both were taking oral contraceptives, which are known to increase the risk of stroke,” he said, noting that Aubrey had a patent foramen ovale (PFO), or a hole in her heart, which likely contributed to her stroke by allowing a clot to bypass the lungs and travel to the brain.

“As for the overall increase in strokes among younger adults, the exact reasons are not fully understood,” he said.

Two Chinese researchers were charged with smuggling a biological pathogen that they planned to study at a University of Michigan lab, a complaint filed Tuesday says.

The charges come as the Trump administration is cracking down on Chinese students studying in the United States and citing alleged connections to the Chinese Communist Party in its ongoing fight with academic institutions.

Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, were charged with conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements and visa fraud for bringing in the fungus Fusarium graminearum from China, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

“The Department of Justice has no higher mission than keeping the American people safe and protecting our nation from hostile foreign actors who would do us harm,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.

The former president has vowed retribution for recent Ukrainian attacks

Russia will “inevitably” respond to recent Ukrainian attacks on its territory despite continuing diplomatic efforts to reach a peaceful settlement of the conflict, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated on Tuesday.

His comments follow suspected acts of Ukrainian sabotage on railways in Russia and drone strikes on multiple Russian airfields at the weekend. Despite this, Russian officials traveled to Istanbul on Monday for another round of direct negotiations with Ukrainian representatives.

In a social media post, Medvedev addressed domestic calls for a more forceful military response, declaring that Russian retaliation was “inevitable.”

“Our army is on an active offensive and will continue its push forward. Everything that needs to be blown up will be, and those who need to be eliminated will be,” he wrote.
