Spraying pesticides on his parched vegetables one street away from the Indus River, Pakistani farmer Homla Thakhur is worried about his future.
The sun is at its peak, the river is running very low, and India has vowed to cut supplies upstream after a deadly militantΒ attackΒ in Kashmir.
“If they stop water, all of this will turn into the Thar desert, the whole country,” said Thakhur, 40, before heading back to the river to refill the tank for the spray gun.

The scientists developing the experimental βSerovaβ Covid mRNA βvaccineβ insist that it will be administered as a nasal spray.
However, the development of inhaled βvaccinesβ could allow for large numbers of people to be βvaccinatedβ at once if the AeroVax were sprayed into the atmosphere.
If the AeroVax were deployed atmospherically, it could βvaccinateβ entire towns and cities at once, bypassing individual consent.
Populations could be βvaccinatedβ without their knowledge under such a scheme.
A total of 75 percent of the participants will get the real version of the real βvaccine,β while the rest will get placebos.
Two versions of the βinhaledβ Covid βvaccinesβ were developed in 2021.
They were named βTri:ChAdβ and βTri:HuAd.β
Like the mRNA injections, both AeroVax βvaccinesβ use some form of the spike protein found in the Covid virus.

A fourth round of nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran has been postponed amid rising tensions and the threat of military action from PresidentΒ Donald Trump, casting doubt on the future of diplomatic efforts to avoid war.
Talks originally scheduled to take place in Rome on Saturday are now on hold, with no new date confirmed.
The postponement follows fresh U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil networks and warnings from Washington about Tehran’s alleged support for Yemen’s Houthi forces. Iran has criticized the U.S. for what it describes as contradictory and provocative behavior.

Matt Arco, a sharp political journalist who doggedly covered governors, presidents, and presidential candidates for NJ Advance Media for more than a decade, died suddenly of natural causes Wednesday, his family said. He was 39.
Deeply sourced, eager to sniff out hypocrisy, and beloved by colleagues, friends, and family, Arco was technically the first reporter hired by NJ Advance Media β the company that provides content to NJ.com and The Star-Ledger β in 2014.
He quickly became a force at the Statehouse bureau, emerging as one of the most respected reporters covering the colorful and dramatic world of New Jersey politics.
Arco was the news organizationβs top reporter chronicling Gov. Chris Christieβs administration and became one of the nationβs go-to journalists on the high-profile Republican, detailing his town halls and presidential campaign stops from New Hampshire to Iowa.
βThat meant covering him every single day until he left office and then some,β Arco said in 2024.
After Christie launched his second bid for president in 2023, Arco produced a must-read New Jersey Advance Media newsletter that gave readers an in-depth account of how the ex-governor tried to topple his former friend Donald Trump.
Life is unfair. Matt Arco died at just 39. Our hearts are broken. He was so sweet. So good. https://t.co/LMIkj9Aci4

Kosmos 482, weighing 500kg, was meant to land on Venus in the 1970s but it never made it out of orbit because of a rocket malfunction
A Soviet-era spacecraft meant to land on Venus in the 1970s is expected to soon plunge uncontrolled back to Earth.
Itβs too early to know where the half-ton mass of metal might come down or how much of it will survive re-entry, according to space debris-tracking experts.
Dutch scientist Marco Langbroek predicts the failed spacecraft will re-enter about 10 May. He estimates it will come crashing in at 150mph (242km/h), if it remains intact.
βWhile not without risk, we should not be too worried,β Langbroek said in an email.
The object is relatively small and, even if it doesnβt break apart, βthe risk is similar to that of a random meteorite fall, several of which happen each year. You run a bigger risk of getting hit by lightning in your lifetime,β he said.

Israelβs firefighting service said 163 ground crews and 12 aircraft were working to contain the flames.
Israelβs fire service says more than 150 firefighting teams are still working to extinguish blazes and 12 aircraft were working to contain the flames.
The fires broke out on Wednesday along the main Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, prompting police to shut the roads and evacuate thousands of residents from nearby areas.
Rescue agency Magen David Adom said it treated 23 people on Wednesday, mostly for smoke inhalation and burns.
Seventeen firefighters have also been injured, according to Israelβs public broadcaster Kan.
Crews worked through the night, allowing the reopening of main roads, including the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv route, police said.
