Kosmos 482, weighing 500kg, was meant to land on Venus in the 1970s but it never made it out of orbit because of a rocket malfunction

A Soviet-era spacecraft meant to land on Venus in the 1970s is expected to soon plunge uncontrolled back to Earth.

It’s too early to know where the half-ton mass of metal might come down or how much of it will survive re-entry, according to space debris-tracking experts.

Dutch scientist Marco Langbroek predicts the failed spacecraft will re-enter about 10 May. He estimates it will come crashing in at 150mph (242km/h), if it remains intact.

β€œWhile not without risk, we should not be too worried,” Langbroek said in an email.

The object is relatively small and, even if it doesn’t break apart, β€œthe risk is similar to that of a random meteorite fall, several of which happen each year. You run a bigger risk of getting hit by lightning in your lifetime,” he said.

Israel’s firefighting service said 163 ground crews and 12 aircraft were working to contain the flames.

Israel’s fire service says more than 150 firefighting teams are still working to extinguish blazes and 12 aircraft were working to contain the flames.

The fires broke out on Wednesday along the main Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, prompting police to shut the roads and evacuate thousands of residents from nearby areas.

Rescue agency Magen David Adom said it treated 23 people on Wednesday, mostly for smoke inhalation and burns.

Seventeen firefighters have also been injured, according to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan.

Crews worked through the night, allowing the reopening of main roads, including the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv route, police said.

Some of the last cargo ships carrying Chinese goods without crippling tariffs are currently drifting into US ports. Come next week, though, that will change.

Cargo on ships from China loaded after April 9 will carry with them the 145% tariff President Donald Trump slapped on goods from that nation last month. Next week, those goods will arrive, but there will be fewer ships at sea and they will be carrying less cargo. For many importers, it is too expensive to do business with China.

Yet China is still one of America’s most important trading partners. It’s where we get most of our clothes, footwear, electronics anο»Ώd microchips, which power appliances, thermostats and anything else that beeps.

Businesses are making a difficult choice: Continue selling products from China at more than double their previous prices or stop selling those products altogether. For consumers, that means some products will be hard to find or may be too expensive to buy.

Tensions rise have risen since last week’s deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir

Pakistan has alleged that India is planning a military strike on its territory, signaling a further escalation in tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

β€œPakistan has credible intelligence that India intends to launch a military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours, using the Pahalgam incident as a false pretext,” Islamabad’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X on Tuesday evening.

β€œAny act of aggression will be met with a decisive response. India will be fully responsible for any serious consequences in the region,” Tarar added.

His statement came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his country’s armed forces β€œfull operational freedom” to determine the mode, targets, and timing of a response to the recent terrorist attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir union territory, which left 26 people dead, mostly tourists.

New Delhi has linked the terrorist attack to Pakistan, reiterating long-standing accusations that its neighbor supports cross-border terrorism and insurgencies.

Update:

Pakistan PM has given the Army the power to do a pre emptive strike on targets that are an imminent threat if necessary.

Pakistan has started mobilizing its Army along its border with India and has kept its Navy on standby as tensions continue to mount between the two countries, sources told India Today.

Tensions have been rising between the nuclear-armed neighbors following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir

Pakistan is expecting an Indian military incursion following last week’s deadly attack in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir region, Pakistan’s defense minister told Reuters on Monday.

On April 22, militants gunned down 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The attack has triggered outrage across Hindu-majority India and led to calls for swift action against Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Speaking to Reuters, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the country’s military is ready to face the mounting threats.

β€œWe have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. So in that situation some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been taken,” Asif said.

According to Asif, Pakistan’s military has briefed the government about the possibility of an Indian attack. However, he did not provide further specifics regarding the intelligence underlying his assessment.
