The 39th US president passed away in his home in Georgia on Sunday
Former US president and Nobel Prize winner Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 in his home in Plains, Georgia on Sunday.
In 2023, the Carter Center revealed that the 39th US president was fighting an aggressive form of melanoma skin cancer. He spent his last years at home under hospice care. He was the longest-lived president in American history.
βMy father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,β his son, James E. Carter III, said in a statement.
βMy brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.β
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter graduated from a naval academy and served as an engineer on a submarine. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1971 and eventually served as president from 1977 to 1981.
