The US president has claimed that Washington is holding direct negotiations with Tehran to avoid βdoing the obviousβ
President Donald Trump has announced that the US will engage in βvery high-level talksβ with Iran over its nuclear program on Saturday, warning that if the negotiations fail, the Islamic Republic will face a βvery bad day.β
The US president revealed last month that he had sent a letter to Iranβs Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing new negotiations over the nuclear deal which the US unilaterally abandoned during Trumpβs first term in 2018. He went on to threaten Iran with bombing strikes βthe likes of which it has never seenβ if Tehran rejects the offer.
Sitting alongside visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday, Trump stressed his preference for a diplomatic resolution.
