The US president has claimed that Washington is holding direct negotiations with Tehran to avoid โ€œdoing the obviousโ€

President Donald Trump has announced that the US will engage in โ€œvery high-level talksโ€ with Iran over its nuclear program on Saturday, warning that if the negotiations fail, the Islamic Republic will face a โ€œvery bad day.โ€

The US president revealed last month that he had sent a letter to Iranโ€™s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing new negotiations over the nuclear deal which the US unilaterally abandoned during Trumpโ€™s first term in 2018. He went on to threaten Iran with bombing strikes โ€œthe likes of which it has never seenโ€ if Tehran rejects the offer.

Sitting alongside visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday, Trump stressed his preference for a diplomatic resolution.
