Defense will contribute to security plan, fighters also ready

Italy’s defence ministry will contribute to security efforts for Pope Francis’s funeral with anti-drone systems, Eurofighter and a destroyer, officials said Thursday.

It has been reported that these measures will be taken to assist in ensuring security.

Around 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs will attend the funeral of Pope Francis. In total, about 130 delegations have confirmed their participation in the mourning ceremony.

Soldiers in combat uniform have been mobilised to St Peter’s Square to guard it from an aerial terrorist attack. They will join the Swiss Guard, the Vatican’s own army, which despite its appearance as a purely ceremonial force undergoes rigorous military training.

Pope Francis’s funeral will take place on Saturday in the open air in front of St Peter’s Basilica, with world leaders including Donald Trump, Sir Keir Starmer and Volodymyr Zelensky as well as dignitaries, among them the Prince of Wales, seated outside.
