The World Health Organization (WHO) fears that the corona pandemic could herald a relapse in the fight against malaria. The pandemic's pressure on funding and care could lead to tens of thousands of additional victims, warns leader Pedro Alonso of the WHO's malaria program.
According to WHO, malaria can be prevented and cured, provided there is adequate funding and adequate care. The corona pandemic threatens to further undermine that aim. If access to treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa is reduced by 10 percent, it would lead to an additional 19,000 deaths. Halving would mean 100,000 additional deaths, according to the WHO.
