Indirect talks between Iran and the United States kick off in the Omani capital of Muscat.

β€œIndirect talks between Dr [Abbas] Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, and Steve Witkoff, the US President’s Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, have begun,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on his X account on Saturday.

The talks are mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, he added.

The Iranian spokesperson noted that the discussions are underway in the location set by Oman, as the host country, with representatives of Iran and the US stationed in separate halls.

Baghaei said the parties would convey their viewpoints and positions to each other through the Omani foreign minister.

Update:

Baghaei said the parties would convey their viewpoints and positions to each other through the Omani foreign minister.

Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s offer of direct negotiations because of his β€œmaximum pressure” policy and threats of military action.

Nevertheless, Tehran has said it will give diplomacy a β€œgenuine chance” and that talks in Oman are an important first step to assess Washington’s intent and resolve.

Speaking after a meeting with his Omani counterpart, Araghchi said the Iranian negotiating team is looking forward to reaching an honorable agreement with the US on an equal footing.

β€œIf the other side holds the same position, God willing, there will be a chance for an initial understanding that will lead to a path of negotiations,” the top Iranian diplomat added.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi also said on Friday that an agreement was likely if Washington stopped its intimidation and threats against Tehran.

β€œIf the American side does not raise unrelated issues and demands and puts aside threats and intimidation, there is a good possibility of reaching an agreement,” he said.

β€œThe Islamic Republic of Iran believes in dialogue and interaction based on mutual respect; and any form of bullying and coercion is unacceptable to us.”

Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has warned of further destabilization in the Middle East

A military conflict with Iran would be highly likely if attempts to renegotiate a new nuclear deal fail, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has warned.

US President Donald Trump has threatened Tehran with a bombing campaign if it does not concede on its nuclear program, which Washington alleges is aimed at developing atomic weapons. The Iranian government, which vehemently denies the claims, has vowed to retaliate against any attack.

Addressing French MPs on Wednesday after an Iran-focused government meeting led by President Emmanuel Macron, Barrot stated that without a new agreement, β€œa military confrontation would appear almost inevitable,” warning that such a scenario could further destabilize the Middle East.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has once again expressed its strong opposition to the use of pressure and threats, including military action, against Iran, emphasizing the need for a negotiated solution to the ongoing issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, responding to a question from β€œIran Nuances” regarding Moscow’s view on increasing sanctions as well as threats from American officials against Iran, including the use of the term β€œbombing,” said, β€œWe have repeatedly stated that resorting to military methods by Iran’s enemies in the context of a settlement is illegal and unacceptable.”

Update:

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Kuwait have all informed Washington that they will not permit U.S. warplanes to use their airspace or military bases for any operations against Iran. In the event of a full-scale war between Iran and the US, no country will dare to deny the US the use of their airspace.

Dozens of people have been reported killed after US President Donald Trump ordered β€œdecisive” military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen, opening a new salvo against the Iran-backed group that has targeted shipping lanes in the Red Sea.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US would deploy β€œoverwhelming lethal force” against the Houthis β€œuntil we have achieved our objective,” signaling the start of a major operation that could last weeks and prompting the Houthis to warn of escalation.

The US strikes killed at least 31 people and injured 101 others in Yemen, mostly women and children, the Houthi-run health ministry said.

The Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels, based in Yemen, started launching drone and missile strikes on vessels in the Red Sea in late 2023 in what they say is revenge for Israel’s war in Gaza. The sustained strikes significantly impacted global trade.

The Houthis stopped their attacks when a Gaza ceasefire was declared in January, but have since threatened to resume them due to Israeli aid blockages to Gaza.

In his post, Trump accused the group of waging β€œan unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, and other, ships, aircraft, and drones.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will begin tomorrow.

The US has doubled recent tariffs imposed on all Chinese imports, effective from Tuesday. The levy, which has risen from 10% to 20%, comes in addition to other targeted duties Washington previously imposed on thousands of goods from the Asian powerhouse.

Last month US President Donald Trump ordered new tariffs on all goods from the country’s three largest trading partners, Mexico, Canada and China, claiming the measures were necessary to protect American interests. He also cited concerns over an influx of lethal drugs from the countries, illegal immigration and trade imbalances.

Washington has accused China of supplying chemicals used in the illicit production of synthetic opioid fentanyl.

An executive order published on Monday claims that Beijing has failed to address the issue, and that 20% levies instead of 10% are being applied.

Beijing has slapped tariffs of up to 15% on various food commodities imported from the US and expanded controls on doing business with American firms. The move comes in response to Washington’s latest tariff hikes on Chinese goods.

On Tuesday, the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced 15% levies on imports of chicken, wheat, corn and cotton from the US, as well as 10% tariffs on American sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The measures come into effect on March 10, according to the ministry’s statement.

The US president has accused the Ukrainian leader of β€œdisrespecting” Washington

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky is not ready for peace as he sees Washington’s involvement in negotiations on the Ukraine conflict as a bargaining chip, US President Donald Trump has stated, following their meeting on Friday.

Trump made the remarks in a social media post after receiving Zelensky at the White house, where the two were expected to sign an agreement granting Washington access to Ukraine’s natural resources.

Zelensky’s visit to the White House was cut short after he got into a heated exchange with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance. Trump accused Zelensky of β€œdisrespectful” behavior during the talks in the Oval Office.

The two ships had 29 crew members on board when calls for help were issued, the Russian Emergency Ministry has said

Two tankers carrying oil products are sinking in the Kerch Strait, the passage that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, according to the Russian Emergency Ministry.

The Volganeft 212 and the Volganeft 239 sent out distress signals and requested assistance amid high winds and powerful waves. The Russian water transport agency has said a total of 29 crew members were on board the two vessels.

According to Russian media reports, powerful waves struck the tankers several kilometers off the Black Sea coast. The Volganeft 212, carrying more than 4,000 tons of fuel oil, has run aground, and the Volgoneft 239 is drifting after sustaining damage.
