Ukrainian air defenses shot down 36 of 43 missiles launched by Russia on Thursday in attacks across the country, Ukraine’s army chief said.

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said in a Telegram post that cruise missiles launched from aircraft in southern Russia were “constantly changing course along the route.”

In an update Thursday, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said Russian forces launched “a massive missile attack” on civilian infrastructure in multiple regions.

Ukrainian officials said at least seven people were wounded in aerial assaults on Kyiv, while two people were injured in Kharkiv.

Meanwhile, Russian shelling killed at least two people in the southern city of Kherson.

Russian peacekeepers have evacuated as many as 5,000 civilians from three districts in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday. 

“Since the start of active hostilities, Russian peacekeepers have evacuated the civilian population from the Mardakert, Martuni and Askeran districts,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Some 5,000 people have been brought to the location of the peacekeeping contingent.”

Due to NATO maneuvers near the Russian borders, the risk of unintentional incidents and aggravation of the situation multiplies, the Russian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik. 

“We would like to emphasize that as a result of the alliance’s maneuvers in close proximity to our state borders, airspace and maritime space, the risk of unintended incidents and aggravation of the situation multiplies,” the ministry said.

“The danger of such cases unwittingly escalating into an armed conflict is extremely high in the current conditions of constant escalation of tensions by NATO,” the ministry added.
