A U.S.-owned ship in the Gulf of Aden was hit by a missile fired from Yemen on Monday, U.S. officials said.
TheΒ U.S. Central CommandΒ identified the vessel as the M/V Gibraltar Eagle, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. The ship is owned by Eagle Bulk, a Stamford, Connecticut-based shipping firm.
The North Korean government said that Pyongyangβs recent launch of a solid-fuel medium-range ballistic missile was successful, North Korean state-run news agency KCNA reported on Monday.
On Sunday, Japanese and South Korean militaries said that North Korea conducted a launch of a ballistic missile, which fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

US Navy destroyer the Laboon was attacked by a cruise missile fired from a Houthi militant area of Yemen, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
“On January 14 at approximately 4:45 p.m. (Sanaa time), an anti-ship cruise missile was fired from Iranian-backed Houthi militant areas of Yemen toward USS Laboon (DDG 58), which was operating in the Southern Red Sea. The missile was shot down in vicinity of the coast of Hudaydah by US fighter aircraft. There were no injuries or damage reported,” CENTCOM said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to hold talks with a North Korean delegation in Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Sputnik on Sunday.
“We are expecting a North Korean delegation inΒ Moscow. Negotiations withΒ Sergey LavrovΒ are planned,”Β Zakharova said.
China will firmly oppose any actions aimed at promoting Taiwan’s independence and interference by external forces in the country’s internal affairs, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office Chen Binhua said on Saturday, commenting on the results of the island’s elections.
Earlier in the day, the Taiwanese Central Election Commission named Lai Ching-te, the candidate from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the winner of the regional leader’s election as he secured 40.05% of the vote. The DPP itself, however, lost 11 seats in the Legislative Yuan, the island’s parliament, as a result of the elections.
“We will adhere to the 1992 consensus, which embodies the One China principle, and firmly oppose separatist actions aimed at achieving Taiwan’s independence, as well as interference by external forces,” Chen told a briefing.
The Taiwanese armed forces spotted 8 Chinese military aircraft and six vessels near the island over the past 24 hours, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
The Taiwanese troops have been monitoring the situation and have ordered air, sea and land units to respond to China’s activities near the island, the statement read.Β
Taiwan is holding general elections on Saturday. The three candidates running for head of the administration of the island are Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who is a pro-independence candidate, Hou Yu-ih of the main opposition Kuomintang party who supports gradual resumption of dialogue with China, and Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People’s Party who is also ready for contacts with Beijing.
