UK ministers discuss COVID-19 concern amid rise in cases
LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was holding a conference call with his senior ministers on Saturday to discuss concern over a new strain of the COVID-19 virus which is rising across parts of Britain, his spokesman said.
The government on Monday said a rise in infections might be partly linked to a new more transmissible variant of the virus when it moved London and other swathes of the country into the highest tier of restrictions to curb the spread of COVID.

Bulgaria expels Russian diplomat over espionage
SOFIA (Reuters) – Bulgaria has given a Russian diplomat 72 hours to leave the country after prosecutors alleged he had been involved in espionage since 2017, the foreign ministry said on Friday.
The Russian diplomat is the sixth to be expelled by NATO member Bulgaria since October 2019 for suspected espionage.
βThe Russian diplomat was declared persona non grata and was given 72 hours to leave,β a foreign ministry spokesman said.

Coronavirus origins: WHO says Beijing βwelcomesβ investigatorsβ trip to China
The Chinese authorities will welcome an international team of Covid-19 investigators who plan to travel to China in January, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.
Its regional emergencies director in the Western Pacific, Dr. Babatunde Olowokure, told reporters on Thursday that the WHO and China are continuing to discuss which places the team might visit.
βOur understanding at this time is that China is welcoming the international team and their visit,βΒ he said.Β βThis is anticipated, as far as we are aware, to happen in early January.β
