The Department of Justice announced today that it filed a lawsuit against Facebook Inc. for discriminating against U.S. workers.

The lawsuit alleges that Facebook refused to recruit, consider, or hire qualified and available U.S. workers for over 2,600 positions that Facebook, instead, reserved for temporary visa holders it sponsored for permanent work authorization (or “green cards”) in connection with the permanent labor certification process (PERM). The positions that were the subject of Facebook’s alleged discrimination against U.S. workers offered an average salary of approximately $156,000. According to the lawsuit, and based on the department’s nearly two-year investigation, Facebook intentionally created a hiring system in which it denied qualified U.S. workers a fair opportunity to learn about and apply for jobs that Facebook instead sought to channel to temporary visa holders Facebook wanted to sponsor for green cards.

NASA’s planetary defense specialists are warning of a close flyby due to take place on Thursday as an asteroid that’s larger than the Statue of Liberty enters Earth’s vicinity traveling at over 100,000kph.

The space rock, which is named 2020 WD5, was first discovered by asteroid trackers as recently as November 18. It measures between 96 and 210 meters in diameter, at the upper end, it would more than double the size of London’s Big Ben.

Republican Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama said he plans to challenge the Electoral College votes on Jan. 6 when Congress meets to certify the election for presumptive President-elect Joseph R. Biden.

In comments to reporters, Mr. Brooks is citing allegations of widespread voter fraud as his motivation.

KABUL (Sputnik) – An explosion hit the central square of the Afghan town of Gardez, Governor of Paktia province Halim Fadai said Thursday.

There have been no details on the casualties yet.

Armed clashes and bomb blasts continue to impact Afghanistan despite the ongoing peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Earlier this week, member of the negotiating team for the Afghan government Nader Nadery said that the Afghan government and Taliban had agreed on the structure of intra-Afghan talks and can start negotiations on the agenda.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Thursday imposed fresh Iran-related sanctions, blacklisting an entity and individual as Washington continues to ramp up pressure on Tehran during U.S. President Donald Trump’s final months in office.

The sanctions targeted the Shahid Meisami Group, linking it to the Iranian Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research, as well as an individual, according to the U.S. Treasury Department’s website.

Barack Obama has been mocked for saying he would take a future Covid-19 vaccine live on camera to prove its safety. Critics quickly recalled a similar “stunt” when he drank newly cleaned water in Flint, Michigan.

“I promise you that when it’s been made for people who are less at risk, I will be taking it,” Obama said of a potential vaccine in a SiriusXM radio interview released on Thursday. “I may end up taking it on TV or having it filmed, just so that people know that I trust this science,” he added.

Ontario is reporting 1,824 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

Locally, there are 592 new cases in Peel, 396 in Toronto and 187 in York Region. 

There are 1,541 more resolved cases and nearly 52,900 tests completed.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, December 2, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – A Ukranian Greek-Catholic priest, who was previously a volunteer in the testing of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, has died suddenly in his home. It is still unclear if the 70-year-old’s death is related to the vaccine.

Fr. John Fields was the Communications and Religious Education Director for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia, which is part of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Announcing his death, the Archeparchy stated that Fr. Fields “has passed away in his home. The cause of death is yet to be determined.” Fr. Fields turned 70 this year.
