Singaporean woman faces execution in China as family launches last desperate appeal

Hong Kong (CNN)The first Ismiraldha Abdullah knew that her mother might be in trouble was when she came home from school in Singapore to find her aunt sobbing, holding a letter in Chinese.Β It was October 2015 and the letter said Ismiraldha’s mother, Siti Aslinda Binte Junaidi, had been arrested in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on suspicion of drug trafficking, and could face the death penalty.IsmiraldhaΒ was shocked. She said she had had little idea what her mother was doing in China, only that she had gone there looking for work, and while she cried along with her aunt at the news, the then 12-year-old still didn’t truly understand what was going on.Almost five years later, Aslinda, now 35, and another Singaporean, 44-year-old Mohd Yusri Bin Mohd Yussof, were found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to death in July 2020.Yusri’s sentence was suspended for two years, meaning it may be downgraded to life imprisonment. Aslinda —Β deemed to have played a more active role in the crime —Β faces execution if her final appeal, which could be heard at any time, is not successful.Β Back in Singapore, her family is trying desperately to save her from this fate, through diplomatic channels and the Chinese legal system, where acquittals are incredibly rare.

Beijing Slams US ‘Empire of Hacking’ Over Claims China Eying Pacific Cable Project For ‘Espionage’

Earlier a row erupted in the Pacific over proposals for a new submarine Internet cable, after China’s Huawei Marine, divested from Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, earlier submitted purportedly cut-rate bids for the Kiribati Connectivity Project, prompting the US to issue a formal warning over the move as potentially undermining security in the region.

Beijing has denounced as β€œpure slander” allegations made by two US senators, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, that China seeks to use a multi-million-dollar undersea cable project in the Pacific for β€œespionage”.

Passengers May Seek Legal Action Against United Airlines After Being Exposed to COVID-19 on Flight That Man Died On

The Jefferson Parish, Louisiana coroners confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that 69-year-old Los Angeles resident, Isaias Hernandez, died from “acute respiratory failure” and “COVID-19” after falling ill on a United Airlines flight from Orlando, Florida to L.A. last Monday. After falling ill, two passengersβ€”a nurse and anEMTβ€”performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him before the flight was diverted to New Orleans where Hernandez eventually passed away.

According to witnesses, passengers heard the man’s wife say that he had been experiencing “COVID-like” symptoms prior to his death. This was news to passengers who say they weren’t warned by United Airlines that a person with COVID symptoms was on the flight. Now, several passengers are claiming to be experiencing health issues following the incident.

Gearing up for a very Cold War? Russia reopens Soviet-era lab to develop weapons for icy Arctic conflict

A specialist research facility has been reopened in Russia, tasked with testing weapons that can withstand freezing temperatures and harsh weather at the ends of the world.

The Central Scientific Research Institute for Precision Machine Engineering, headquartered just outside Moscow, announced on Thursday that the laboratory had received state certification and would begin testing imminently. Founded under the Soviet Union, it had fallen into disrepair and its equipment has since been replaced and restored.

In a press release, the head of the scientific and technical centre at the Institute said thatΒ β€œthe certification is the final step towards restoring this unique technological capability that had been lost after the fall of the USSR.”

Biden says he’s β€˜unlikely’ to cancel $50,000 in student debt, dispelling notion of leading β€˜most progressive’ administration

US President-elect Joe Biden will not go out of his way to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt by executive action amid the pandemic, ignoring calls from some of the top Democrats to do so.

While speaking to journalists on Wednesday Biden prefaced his response to the student loan forgiveness plan by saying: β€œI’m going to get in trouble for saying this.” He then went on to call the idea of canceling it via executive powers β€œpretty questionable,” adding, β€œI’m unsure of that. I’d be unlikely to do that.”

The president-elect’s comment appears to be an outright dismissal of the plan championed by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and also Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) in the House.
