Unexpected side effect? Australia scraps Covid-19 vaccine development after trials lead to false positives for HIV
Australia has abandoned the development of a domestically-made coronavirus vaccine after participants in clinical trials for the jab returned false positive test results for HIV.
The drug, created by the University of Queensland (UQ) and biotech firm CSL, triggered aΒ βrobustβΒ immune response to SARS-COV-2 in phase 1 trials, but it also led to some unfortunate complications involving another dangerous virus. Antibodies that were shielding participants from a Covid-19 infection were also leading to false positives on HIV tests.

Trump asks Supreme Court to invalidate millions of votes in battleground states

New whale species discovered in Mexico
CNN)Scientists working off the western coast ofΒ MexicoΒ say they have found a previously unknownΒ species of whale.Three beaked whales were spotted last month by a team of scientists working with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, some 300 miles from the US border, according to a press release published Tuesday.

Pakistani army on high alert amid reports of Indian plan to conduct surgical raid
Pakistan’s army has been put on high alert after reports alleged India was preparing to launch an attack on the de facto border that divides the disputed Kashmir region between the two countries.
Pakistani Dawn newspaper quoted “informed sources” as saying on Wednesday that the Indian military had plans to launch the attack after it recently faced a humiliating defeat in Ladakh and Dokalam in the volatile region.
The daily said Pakistan’s Armed Forces had been put on high alert to face any “untoward situation.”
The sources said a “false flag operation” was also being planned by India to divert attention from they said were several of the country’s internal issues, including protests by farmers, the mistreatment of minorities, and alleged atrocities committed by the Indian forces in Kashmir.
China says US should ‘unconditionally’ lift Iran sanctions, return to 2015 nuclear deal
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian says the US should βunconditionallyβ and immediately return to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and lift all sanctions against Tehran.
The Chinese official said Washington should fulfill its duties under the historic deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plane of Action (JCPOA).
βWe hope that the new US administration will return to the JCPOA and resume compliance as soon as possible and unconditionally, lift all relevant sanctions, take concrete actions to fulfill its duties, and advance the process of political settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue and safeguard regional peace and stability,β Zhao said at a press briefing on Wednesday.
