The United States intends to once again station nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom amid increased tensions with Russia, The Telegraph reported on Friday. 

The United States intends to station nuclear warheads at the Royal Air Force’s Lakenheath base, the report said, citing Defense Department documents. 

Washington removed its nuclear weapons from the United Kingdom in 2008 after having stationed them there during the Cold War.

The exact number of nuclear weapons that the United Kingdom holds is not publicly disclosed. However, as of 2020, the official UK government position is that its nuclear arsenal consists of no more than 180 warheads. The move leaves Hungary as the last holdout yet to approve Stockholm’s application to join the US-led military bloc

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has formally ratified Sweden’s bid to join the NATO military bloc, finalizing the decision after months of political wrangling over the Nordic state’s stance toward Kurdish militant groups deemed terrorists by Ankara.

In a presidential decree published on Thursday, Erdogan signed off on an earlier decision by the Turkish parliament to approve Sweden’s bid, some 20 months after the country’s initial application. The final accession document will now be sent off to Washington for review, as is required under the bloc’s regulations.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson hailed the decision in a social media post, saying it marked a “key milestone” for “Sweden’s path towards NATO membership.” In his own post, Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom noted that “only Hungary’s ratification remains before Sweden can become a member of NATO.”

Russia knows against who the NATO drills are held and has never had any illusions about this matter, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday. 

On Wednesday, NATO spokesman Dylan White announced the launch of Steadfast Defender 2024, the alliance’s largest military exercise in recent decades. 

“The exercises are rather unprecedented, and they do not hide who they are conducting these exercises against. Actually, we have never had illusions, we know what the NATO military infrastructure is,” Peskov told reporters.

The North Korean Missile Administration on Wednesday carried out the first test-fire of the still under-development “new-type strategic cruise missile Pulhwasal-3-31”, the North’s state-run news agency KCNA reported.

The launch of the missile is “a process of constant updating of the weapon system,” which is “a regular and obligatory activity of the administration and its affiliated defence science institutes,” KCNA cited the administration as saying.

The Kiev regime shot down the plane, seeking to pin the blame on Russia for the deaths of the Ukrainian POWs, the Russian Defense Ministry stated.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that radar facilities of the Russian Aerospace Forces recorded the launch of two Ukrainian missiles.

“The aircraft was attacked by Ukrainian forces from the Liptsy locality of the Kharkov region using an anti-aircraft missile system. The radar of the Russian Armed Forces observed the launch of two Ukrainian missiles,” the ministry said.

Advisor to the head of Zelensky’s office, Mykhailo Podolyak, refused to comment on the downed Russian Il-76, telling Reuters that time is needed to clarify the information.

Earlier in the day the Ministry of Defense of Russia stated that the plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war was shot down by two Ukrainian missiles over the Belgorod Region.
