Something fishy! Government investigation finds bacteria & banned preservatives in Russia’s festive favourite – caviar

It’s traditionally eaten with a pearl spoon so that metal doesn’t taint its flavour, but this year, Russian caviar aficionados might be left with a bitter taste in their mouths for an entirely different reason.

Russia’s state quality control watchdog, Roskachestvo, issued a warning on Thursday after a survey of black sturgeon caviar on sale revealed a number of safety concerns.

Siberia braces for close to record-breaking cold over New Year, with temperatures predicted to hit freezing -50 degrees

Russia’s Hydrometeorological Center has forecast that Western and Central Siberia will see temperatures as low as -50 celsius before the end of the year – around 20 degrees lower than the typical December cold.

Earlier this year, in the height of summer, the highest-ever temperature seen above the Artic Circle was recorded, with the small town of Verkhoyansk seeing the mercury reach as high as +38.

β€œExtremely cold weather in Siberia has not happened for a long time,” explained Roman Vilfand, the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, noting that the upcoming freeze will come close to the all-time record.Β β€œThe temperature is 20 to 24 degrees below normal. For example, in the center of the Krasnoyarsk Region, it will reach -50 degrees.”

Singaporean woman faces execution in China as family launches last desperate appeal

Hong Kong (CNN)The first Ismiraldha Abdullah knew that her mother might be in trouble was when she came home from school in Singapore to find her aunt sobbing, holding a letter in Chinese.Β It was October 2015 and the letter said Ismiraldha’s mother, Siti Aslinda Binte Junaidi, had been arrested in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on suspicion of drug trafficking, and could face the death penalty.IsmiraldhaΒ was shocked. She said she had had little idea what her mother was doing in China, only that she had gone there looking for work, and while she cried along with her aunt at the news, the then 12-year-old still didn’t truly understand what was going on.Almost five years later, Aslinda, now 35, and another Singaporean, 44-year-old Mohd Yusri Bin Mohd Yussof, were found guilty of drug trafficking and sentenced to death in July 2020.Yusri’s sentence was suspended for two years, meaning it may be downgraded to life imprisonment. Aslinda —Β deemed to have played a more active role in the crime —Β faces execution if her final appeal, which could be heard at any time, is not successful.Β Back in Singapore, her family is trying desperately to save her from this fate, through diplomatic channels and the Chinese legal system, where acquittals are incredibly rare.

Beijing Slams US ‘Empire of Hacking’ Over Claims China Eying Pacific Cable Project For ‘Espionage’

Earlier a row erupted in the Pacific over proposals for a new submarine Internet cable, after China’s Huawei Marine, divested from Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, earlier submitted purportedly cut-rate bids for the Kiribati Connectivity Project, prompting the US to issue a formal warning over the move as potentially undermining security in the region.

Beijing has denounced as β€œpure slander” allegations made by two US senators, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, that China seeks to use a multi-million-dollar undersea cable project in the Pacific for β€œespionage”.

The Jefferson Parish, Louisiana coroners confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that 69-year-old Los Angeles resident, Isaias Hernandez, died from “acute respiratory failure” and “COVID-19” after falling ill on a United Airlines flight from Orlando, Florida to L.A. last Monday. Gearing up for a very Cold War? Russia reopens Soviet-era lab to develop weapons for icy Arctic conflict

A specialist research facility has been reopened in Russia, tasked with testing weapons that can withstand freezing temperatures and harsh weather at the ends of the world.
